Need new laptop for college

I am headed off to college this fall, as a pre-med major... needless to say, I think I need a new laptop... the only issue? I don't know where the funds are going to come from... I need something cheap but relatively fast (for taking notes and such, can't be waiting ages for that). I would much prefer windows over anything else.

Do you have any idea of how much you want to spend? Also keep in mind there will be tons of changes between now and the end of summer.
