I have been looking for a new CPU for a while, now that mine is 8 years old, and have been seen a couple different options. I have a GTX 950, and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. I have looked on bottlenecker.com and was told to get a Xeon W3550. I've also looked at a couple already posted fourms and I've also seen a Intel Pentium G3258 reccomended, and a i3-6100. I'm wondering if one of these is the clear winner, or if there is a different one that beats all of them. I also would like to keep my budget for the CPU under $100. Thanks!

Nothing newer than Haswell Refresh (Z97 chipset for overclocking) on the Intel side... and anything pretty much pre- AM4 socket on the AMD side, But, if you're going that old... might as well stick to Intel. Only issue now is availability.

I'll probably end up going with that, but last question: Is upgrading to one of the Haswell Refreshes from an i5 750 really going to make that much of a change, or is it really not going to be noticable until I upgrade to 1151?

You have to toss your GPU into the mix when considering this question. the GTX-950 will bottleneck most games before you see a significant difference, but there may be a few that will see the improvement, especially if you get an i7.

Sorry if I'm getting this completely wrong, but you're saying that I won't see much of a difference until I get an i7, regardless of LGA 1151 or Haswell?

My apologies for my part on the confusion here. With the GTX-950, most of what you'll run into will be bottlenecked by the GPU, so any improvements that could be realized by a newer CPU will be lost. There are some improvements to be had by a newer i5 or i7, and some games will take advantage of an i7's extra threads for even better performance, but not many right now. Games like CS:GO may not see noticeable improvements, operating at the high speeds it currently run at. Games like Witcher 3 will see some improvement with a better CPU, but with that GPU you have, it will be lost.

IOW: you might see some improvements, but they might not be drastic, in upgrading to another i5 or i7. Also, some of those improvements will be lost with a bottlenecked GPU. You'd probably see your greatest improvement with a new, more powerful, GPU, which at least on the new market, may be out of your budget range.
