need new printer

My Canon i850 bit the dust so I'm in need of a new printer. Trying to
decide what to but isn't easy though. I do quite of bit of colored
printing(not photos though so it doesn't have to be great color. I'm
thinking about getting a HP 1000 business inkjet printer. The print head is
not in the cartridges so they are less expensive and have a lot more ink
than normally. I've checked laser printers and they are too big and not and
cheaper as far as printing goes. Anyone have any ideas to help me decide
what to buy?

Samsung colour laser - CLP-510. Comes with 64Mb, 250 sheet feeder,
does duplex and there is an option for networking if required. In the
UK it costs £250 so I would image it'll come out at no more the $350.

I don't do enough printing to warrant buying a laser. I did look into a few
of them but they are too big and not that cost efficient. Actually from the
information I gather the HP 1000 is cheaper to print than the laser. Oh I
need one that prints color.
Anyone with experience in refilling or generic cartridges on the HP
printers?

Gayle - there are two links that deal with refilling or aftermarket
cartridges (carts for short) Neil Slade's site is interesting and has some

They are both helpful in sorting out the aftermarket ink and cartridge issue
and helping someone to get started with these products if they wish to.

Canon printers are ideal for those who want to refill carts as there are no
chips in the cartridges (Epson and HP) that make refilling a bit more
complex. They are also transparent and allow you to know the ink level
prior to and during refilling. There is one individual on this NG who
always follows your question about aftermarket ink and carts and my response
with negative comments. While he is certainly entitled to his opinion, he,
by his own admission, has never refilled carts or used aftermarket carts or
inks.

I use a Canon i960 printer (six color) with bulk MIS inks and find my photos
to be equally as beautiful as with Canon inks. Several participants in this
ng use Formulabs bulk inks, also very successfully. After you read Neil's
site about his technique for refilling and read instructions from various
ink vendor's sites you can then decide if you want to refill. I find it
easy to do, not too time consuming, and minimally messy. With rubber gloves
on and a work area that can survive a few little drops of ink you will soon
learn the little tricks that make it really easy.

You mentioned that you are not particularly interested in printing photos,
so a six or eight color printer isn't necessary. The IP1500 ink tanks are
extremely small and not as easy to refill. The IP3000 and IP4000 are two to
consider, and I expect that the IP4000 would be the better of the two for
your purposes.

Generic inks - those that are sold to be used for several manufacturers'
printer - are to be avoided. Although there may be several decent bulk inks
I would stay with either MIS or Formulabs bulk ink, both of which claim to
be formulated for each specific manufacturer and model. Formulabs is
available from Alotofthings. I believe that the smallest quantity of
Formulabs ink is in 4 oz. containers, and you can buy MIS in 2 oz
containers. You can refill the original carts and there are also
aftermarket empty carts available that are quite good.

Before you buy the printer, however, do read Neil Slade and Nifty sites for
background info. If you have further questions you can sign in to the
Nifty-stuff forum and ask any questions you wish. It is a very friendly,
helpful forum for newcomers and very experienced computer users alike. Be
sure that you don't use aftermarket products unless they havebeen personally
recommended by people that have used them.

Hi Gayle

HP makes generally sound hardware.

However, their installation programs and
driver software are often a royal pain in
the posterior. If things don't go right, and
you have to uninstall then reinstall, you
can end up in a little corner of hell.

I imagine they assign drivers and installation
software to junior engineers and/or summer
interns.

If you can get past that issue, they're fine devices.

refilling my Cannon cartridges and didn't mind it at all. If I could have
found another i850 I probably would have purchased it. What's the URL for

The iP3000 is the direct replacement for the i850, but with the added
features of duplexing, dual paper trays, etc... I've got quite a few
printers and so far my favorite is the iP4000 which is based on the i860.
Both are fine, but based upon what you stated the iP3000 would fill the
bill. www.newegg.com has them at $64.90 + $3.95 s&h for a total of $68.85.
Canon has a $20 rebate which brings the cost down to $48.85 and if you have
also purchased a new system since Feb 1, 2005 the rebate is $70, so you'd be
making a profit of $1.15. I happened to fall into that category and ordered
one 3 days ago and it came in this morning. Still in the box and sitting
next to the other iP3000 which I bought brand new off eBay for $15 + s&h.
One is for my oldest daughter and the other will be used for cd/dvd printing
once I get around to making a cd tray (which isn't available on North
American models). The rebate also applies to the iP4000.

As you've already stated that you are an experienced refiller and want to
try Formulabs ink, you can find it at, www.alotofthings.com which is a very
well respected online vendor. You can order directly from them or from their
eBay store, which has slightly lower prices. The web site for Formulabs is
www.formulabs.com and their parent company is Sensient Technology
www.sensient-tech.com . I've been a customer of alotofthings for several
years and have always been very satisfied with their customer service,
prices and professionalism.

On all printers, it is wise to price consumables before making a
decision based upon prince of printer alone. Look at how much ink or
toner you are provided with the printer at purchases time, nd the yield
that will provide. Then look at cost of paper, if specialty papers will
be required for quality output (and you need that), and what consumables
are otherwise requires.

Laser printers usually require toner (one for each color), a drum or
transfer belt, sometimes fuser oil or distribution set. These can
become quite costly for regular users. The drum or transfer belt
lifespan is usually shown based upon one color, meaning you need to
divide by 4 if you regularly print 4 color (CMYK) images or text.

Also, keep in mind most yields are based upon 5% per color at best. If
you will be printing photographic images, consider at least 10-15 times
that.

The pigment black ink is the same for both printers - BCI-3eBK, but for CMY
the i850 uses the older BCI-3e ink formulation and the iP3000 uses BCI-6
ink. The tanks are identical, but the contents are not. I doubt that it
would cause any damage, but with refill ink so inexpensive from
www.alotofthings.com or www.hobbicolors.com you will actually have recouped
your printer purchase cost + the price of the refill inks once you have
refilled a second time.

Another option:

You can use the older BCI-3 ink as well, but it MAY not get a perfect
colour match.

So for photos, use the proper BCI-6 ink. For graphic charts or similar,
the slight colour mismatch won't be an issue.
