Hey guys, i'm just looking for opinions on my rig. If you guys think there is anything necessary to upgrade please let me know.

mobo: asus z97-a
cpu: intel i5 4690k
gpu: nvidia gtx 1080
ram: hyperX fury 8GB DDR3
psu: corsair cx850m
hdd: 1tb wd blue (is ssd worth it?)

monitor: asus rog swift pg278q (1440p 144hz gsync)

Solution
If your just gaming and don't really care about the 1 Minute boot time then no a SSD is not really needed. Not the Quality power supply I would be looking for Seasonic, EVGA GS or G2 series, XFX TXR or TS series, Corsair RMx.
Since you already have everything listed then either a SSD or a good aftermarket CPU cooler for the processor if you just wish to spend some money.
Before you buy more memory open task manager and do what you do with the PC and see if you using most of the 8GB you already have, if your not using it adding more does nothing for performance.

yes an SSD is worth it. do not go only SSD. IMHO every system should have one of each (SSD and huge HDD). if you can afford to add an ssd it will feel like a different computer.
it looks like you have the parts and system running already. I would consider changing the power supply to a more reliable series. (ignore if you have the black and grey model, the NEW cx series is grey and black and much improved over the green/black old cx series)
SSD yes. PSU soon. my 2 cents.

It's interesting you went into ram. that is the 1 thing I never truly understood. I was never sure if I should get more ram or not. I use my pc for intense gaming. The build I listed is what I have and im maxing games at ultra 1440p and hitting 80+ fps. Though i'm curious if adding more ram would increase the fps? I'm a complete idiot when it comes to ram and I don't know why lol.

I guess I need to invest in a SSD. It's kinda like when I was on a 60hz monitor and everyone told me 144hz is amazing but I thought meh it can't be that much of a difference. Then one day I bought my current monitor which is 144hz and wow I will never go back to 60hz. The amount of smoothness is... I can't even explain the difference lol. As for the psu, I know that I should get a gold certified but I kinda of made an impulse decision when I purchased the cx850m and I believe it's the grey and black one so I guess I am okay. If I ever upgrade I will do gold instead of bronze. Thanks for the input =)

gold / silver / bronze / platinum says nothing about the quality of a PSU sadly
it's the efficiency, but let me tell you, there are some highly efficient PSUs out there that are absolute garbage
a gold certified PSU will run a little cooler since less power is converted into heat. not enough that you'll notice a difference on your electrical bills nor on the thermometer
it's more about the interior design of the PSU and the parts used to build it.
