Need PSU recommendations please!

Hi, I recently built a PC a few weeks ago and went cheaper on my power supply than I realized according to some of the posters here at Tomshardware.(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371016)..

I'm looking to buy a new GPU here soon (GTX 770/R9 280X), and although iv'e done plenty of research regarding whether or not I can run one of those safely/comfortably, i'm still not 100% sure if I should risk it. Some people say my PSU can run those with no problem, others say there's not enough AMPs or whatnot (I'm struggling to understand the math behind wattage/volts/amp).

So i'm most likely gonna break down and buy a new PSU, unless i'm 100% reassured that my current BP550 Plus PSU can run a GTX770/R9 280X without much risk.

My Specs are: 970A-UD3P Motherboard, 8GB GSkill Sniper 1600 RAM, FX-6300 CPU, HD 5870 GPU, Rosewill Galaxy-03 Case, and the PSU linked above.

Can anyone recommend reliable 550-650w PSU with with good amps/efficiency rating for around $50-80? TYVM in advance!

The Antec power supply has a total of 444 watts available on the 12v rails.
444 watts/12volts=37amps
37amps x 12volts =444 watts
Good quality power supplies are not cheap, unless you can find one on sale.
Any power supply in tier three or above in this list is considered good. Tier 1 is top of the line.

The stats you listed for my PSU suggests that it is insufficient to run said GPU's correct?, and since those numbers don't lie.. how does Antec label it a 550w? Just curious!

444 watts is the 12v rail only. the 3.3 and 5v lines are also added into the total wattage of 550watts.
The 770 suggest a minimum of 42 amps on the 12v rail. The R9 280x is the same I believe.
So your power supply is a little under powered. It would probably run the cards for a 30 minute gaming session but would begin to overheat and produce less power to the point of suddenly shutting down mid game.
An upgrade is definitely needed.
Most power supplies(not all) are most efficient in the 75 to 80% load range. once you go past this point efficiency drops and temperatures increase as a result.

Thanks once again.. iv'e been looking online for the past hour or two trying to find the power requirements for a R9 280 (non X).. sorry to keep re-posting, but would you happen to know if I could run a R9 280 with my PSU? If not.. I may just get a GTX 760.
