Need recomendations for parts to build a Gaming Desktop. I know next to nothing about computer parts.

I posted something a few hours ago in video gaming, and after looking around a bit I realized systems would be a better place to put this. I'd appreciate any advice or help any of you will give me. I'm trying to put together a good gaming desktop. This will be the first computer I've ever put together.
Right now I'm just concerned with getting a tower together, I have already have a monitor, keyboard, etc.

I'd like to keep it under $1,000, but if I'd save more in the long run by buying something a little more expensive than I'd be willing to go up a few hundred dollars.

Thanks for the reply, I'm not sure if I need a case, I already have an old windows xp, its from 2002, would that work as a case or would it be better to just buy a new one?
