Need some AMD CPU help

Trying to help out a guy that has an old AM2+ build, from what ive been able to figure out these are his specs

Asus M3N78 Pro motherboard
Athlon X2 7750
4x2GB G.skill CL5 DDR2 800Mhz
9500GT

I have an old 8800 GTX sitting on my desk and everything i could find comparing the 2 says the 8800 GTX is better. I figured i would just give it to him, it does me no good laying around anyway.

Where i fall short is, ive never bought or even built an amd computer so i have no idea what fits in what socket or what. Ive gone through the CPU support list but it makes no sense to me.

The board says it will handle up to 140w cpu, and on some forums people are saying that a AM3 cpu will fit in the socket. Could someone AMD inclined figure out what the best CPU is for this board.

PS do not recommend a new build

Thanks for any help

You need to know his psu (model,brand,...) otherwise if you upgrade you can simply kill the pc because the psu gets overloaded (the 8800 gtx consumes about more than 2x the power of a 9500gt).

Also since that pc is ancient I would just recommend a new pc overall. Since he is still using these old spcs I assume he is not an intensive user and can be happy with a generic cheap desktop or laptop.

not to worried about the PSU, picked up a few Seasonic s12ii 520w units last week since they are $30

Ill take a look at those cpus, how about the phenom II x4 965, that one is on the list. Wasn't the 965 an 1100t both the rage back then? although i dont see the 1100t on the list

I second the "need to know the PSU" comment. No, you should not put an AM3 CPU in there.

I also know from experience that the Athlon II 640 and DDR2 are *not* going to provide anything close to decent performance in modern games; it might not completely bottleneck the 8800 GTX but anything more is going to be bottlenecked.

Does your friend have an upgrade budget at all? His system is old enough that even a lower-end upgrade (e.g. Pentium G4560 + DDR4) will be a noticeable improvement.

Edit: if you're buying a new CPU anyway, then the cost to upgrade to a modern platform is just the *difference* between the AM2+ CPU and the new CPU + m/b + RAM. Depending on budget, he could get G4560 + low-end Intel board, or AM Ryzen 3 + board. The Ryzen option would also give him another decent upgrade path, because AMD have promised that the Ryzen socket will last several generations. Intel... basically require a new motherboard each new chip generation.

the P 2 x4 965 is averaging between 20 an 50 bucks on ebay right now.

I want to say hes still running XP 64 bit on it and is completely happy. Hes more of a pinball/arcade person but does play some older games on computer. He probably hasnt played a game made newer then 2010
