Hi everyone!
I am finally building a new PC after 7-8 years. I need some help with choosing a new CPU specifically a new Ryzen CPU. My current build has a AMD-FX 8120 which by all accounts is a terrible CPU nowadays.

The only thing I have kept up to date is the Graphics card which is a R9-380X 3GB which I plan to use in my new build as its still a fairly decent card.

The new build is going to be a gaming PC but I'm on a much tighter budget then I was when I built my old PC and I am wondering if a Ryzen 3 would be good enough to supply my GPU or should I just bite the bullet and spring for a Ryzen 5? I plan to game in 1080P only.

Thanks

At this point in time a 4 core/4 thread CPU is a bit out of date. It's a solid choice for people on a tight budget, no question there, but there are already games which will use more CPU than that.

If possible, a Ryzen 5 4 core/8 thread CPU would be a better choice. Some day you'll want to upgrade your videocard and a Ryzen 5 will allow you to get maximum benefit from that. If you are using a Ryzen 3, any future videocard upgrade will have limited impact on performance.

If you don't play CPU dependent games though then a Ryzen 3 will be fine.
If you can swing it, I'd go R5 over a R3. Granted, an R3 will be an upgrade over your current CPU, however the R5 would be a better choice. Also, if you can wait a couple/few months, the new Ryzen's will be coming out.
