Need some help with my phenom x2 550

Ok heres my problem I cant over clock my phenom ii x2 550 be over 3.4 ghz or it crashes in prime95 I get a blue screen error memory crash heres my system

Phenom ii x2 550 be
Mobo GA-MA770t-UD3p rev 1.1
memory g.skill ddr3 1600 2x 4gb F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ have it set at right timings 9-9-9-24
850 watt azza power supply
His 4670 video card
Windows7 64bit

I have a Thermaltake Fan for my Cpu runs at 27c idel and only goes up to 34c after 2 hours of prime95 I have unlocked this CPU with the f5 bios and have ran it as a 4core in prime95 temps idel at 31c however went up to 49c prime95 after 2 hours no errors however I don't really need 4 cores just doing some low ended gaming (this my SC2 comp should be out by July I hope) so I was just going to run it as a 2core at 3.9ghz but I cant even get over 3.5 with out crash I have ran memtest86+ 4 pass 0 errors like 4 hours of test

I have put cpu voltage all the way up to 1.5volts just to try and run 3.4ghz and added nb volts by .25 don't really know what to do at this point my system runs very cool system temp 28c cpu temp around 30 when I play a game and the videocard is 40c using a azza 910 case had to remove the rear fan the thermaltake CPU Fan is massive my top fan still in so still got 2 fans putting air in and 1 out runs very cool

BTW using easytune6 to look at my temps came with the mobo speedfan shows the same temps 1degree off so I think its right on

I'm thinking that overclocking my cpu messes with the amd memory controller so I might just have to do a very light overclock kinda upsettin9

OHH yes I did misread. 10.5k is a good score for a 3.1 ghz clock so I suppose that the cores are fine.

Huh yeah the results are definitely rather odd. Min voltage 5.8v on a 12v rail.. Holy crap that is horrible.

Can you restart your computer several times checking the voltages on the PSU each time and tell me if it gives the same results.

I am going to guess you have the Azza 850w Dynamo PSU?

Here it is running in 4core mode running prime95 just ran it for 15 min temps got up to 50c but stayed there think max is 60c a good system cheap 4core pc but I cant overclock it 🙁

I was able to overclock the 4 cores to 3.5 stable using amd overdrive and used burn in test to get my cpu mark which is 4667.6 Passmark Taiting 1577.8 These numbers look good?

The temps are fine, just try to keep it in the lower 50s. What voltage are you using to get 3.5ghz?

Also, are you using the rated voltages for your RAM? If it helps, you can increase the voltage for it up to 1.6V-1.65V. AMD procs work better with 1333 settings, plus you can lower your timings to 8-8-8-24.

Ram voltage is 1.5v as its rated how ever my mobo voltage auto sets to 1.6v min voltage for this board but it shows up as 1.5v it is supported for this mobo http://www.gigabyte.us/FileList/MemorySupport/mb_memory_ga-ma770t-ud3p.pdf so I should drop my timings and set it back to 1333 ima try that when I get home

You shouldn't need 1.5v for just 3.4 ghz clock. It's very likely that the 2 cores that were locked were defective (as oppose to your 550 just being a 955 or the like but with locked cores). I use 1.45v for a 3.7 ghz clock on my unlocked AMD 550 and that is really high already.

Don't use AMD overdrive to over clock, it produces some unstable results. Manual bios over clocking is the best way to go about that.
Can you use HWmonitor instead of easytune6, since unlocking your cores knocks off the temperature diodes on the CPU, your going to have to use ACPI on HWmonitor.

Also if you can run a 3dmark06 or 3dmark vantage for CPU only@ 3.5ghz using AMD overdrive, this will help reduce discrepancies such as under-performing cores(could be a likely hint that you got a bad batch of CPU). Afterwards I recommend going to manual bios over clock.

I recommend using Prime95 to test for stability, not overdrive's burn in test. Test it for 1/2 hrs, monitor the temperatures often. If it stays under 55c, test for 3 hrs monitoring the temperatures. 3 hrs of Prime95 is the bare minimum I would do to call a system stable, preferably 12 hrs is what I aim for.


Im hitting 12k on 3dmark vantage on my AMD Phenom 550 x2 (4 cores unlocked) 3.7 ghz. Let me know what you hit.

Wow wow, 3000 cpu score on 3dmark Vantage? Interesting. That's quite low. Can you download performancetest and let me know your results, post a screen shot please. Also let me know what version of performance test you used. (Passmark performance test). I will downclock my processor and see what I score as well on 3dmark vantage at 3.1ghz with 4 cores. In all honestly judging by the score it seems very possible that the 2 cores that were locked were indeed defective or way under performing.
I do see what you mean by the voltage being a little higher on HWmonitor. Hmm I suppose you can use 1.44v instead of 1.45v, see if that let's you stay stable. Sometimes motherboards depending on quality may under feed the cpu or over feed it.
As far as the PSU when I get home I will check a few cheap PSU's I got and see if that's normal behavior for a PSU.

I would recommend calling AMD and asking for an RMA. Hopefully you get a better batch. Just use any excuse like will not boot with your PC even after resetting cmos configuration. no voltage modifications or overclocking should be mentioned to play it safe.

Cpu score 10696 Gpu score a lowly 3025C you miss read it -_- 10.5k seems fine for 4 cores running at 3.1ghz and i was looking at my -12 and -5 -12 running at like -7 and -5 running at -13 wtf i dunno never had a -5 b4

Cant upload picture of it trail key one time usage :fou: but those are the numbers

Spent another hour on this unknown issues when I shut down computer and I cant turn it right back on have to wait a min or so or I unplug it for 20 seconds and I can turn it back on

Changes my Ram timings and Bios voltages every which way not able to get a stable over clock

Still don't understand how its not stable at 3.5ghz as a phenom ii x2 550 be but its stable as a 3.1ghz phenom ii x4 b50

Other thoughts my ddr3 g.skill ram might be the issue but its stable at 1600 with 4 cores at 3.1ghz and at 1333 but I get bsod when I attempt even a mild overclock Well guess ill just have to be stuck with my unlocked 550 at 3.1 ghz dunno why I cant overclock this thing....
