havent done any editing for a while, and was downloading codecs to
view videos and had some problems with one of my players. no big deal
because I was able to use another....

now I had to do a quick editing of a video, and my software would not
render. I am pretty sure I can blame the added codecs of various
pedigrees, so I uninstalled them all.

now, I would like to get the latest codec(s) pack(s) that are fairly
stable. anyone have some suggestions as to where to go to download?

I could be wrong but if you try and open the video in Windows Media
Player and you have an internet connection while you do this, it will
automatically find the correct codec for you and download it.

First I would get GSpot, a nice free utilty:
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Then I would go to these sites. I prefer the first site listed:

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=6#6
http://www.free-codecs.com/
http://codecs.nm.ru/
http://www.moviecodec.com/video/
