Need to hook laptop to 2560x1440

I have a laptop that has a mini display port, hdmi and vga outs. I need to hook it to my 2560 x 1440 crossover monitor. The monitor only has a dvi-d dual link input. By mistake i have purchased both active and non active mini display port to dvi-d cables and that obviously did not work. After figuring out I needed a dual link cable I bought a non active HDMI to div-d dual link cable. When I hook it to the monitor it acts like it does not get a signal. When i try to go into the screen resolution it shows up there but when i try to activate it it says it cant use the current configuration. Do I need to buy an active dvi-d dual link converter or what? Also I know the monitor works because I can hook it to my desktop through the dvi just fine. if someone could please tell me what cable I need to buy i'd be very grateful, I'm tired of wasting money trying different cables.

You need a mini display port to dual link DVI active converter. They don't come very cheap and they have mixed reviews so do with that what you want.
