Need to know Ifthis is a high quality PSU

Solution
Solid units, made by Super Flower.... but they are built down to a pricepoint.

Rated for 40'C (opposed to 50'C for the higher wattage B3 units) and use a sleeve bearing fan.... which have a shorter lifespan.
5 year warranty on them.

They're solid.... but for $100 CAD, I'd say it's not worth it.

The CX650 from Corsair would be a better option.

What hardware are you planning on running from it?
Most single GPU setups in 2018 are fine with a quality 450-550W unit and, while we get screwed in Canada on pricing/availability, there are options in that range - although they're all Corsair units at $100 or less.

As bignastyid stated, 3 failed during TH testing.

The review I read at JohnnyGuru had no such issue(s)

BUT, speaks to being built down to a pricepoint..... there's going to be some corners cut, and QC may not be all it really should be.

EVGA have some relatively poor "gold" units too - the NEXG isn't great, for example.

In Canada, you're got Corsairs CX and TX units at $70-$110 (450W-650W)

Currently though..... the EVGA G3 550w is at $95 (was $120-$130 the other day, I'm pretty sure).

The best price vs quality option available in Canada right know AFAIK.

JonnyGURU reviews don't test noise or protections, so their review is useless here.
In your second link, under protection features, OTP and OPP are set too high.
Same thing with the EVGA G3 850 and 1000 review at Toms. ¬1400 RPM / 33dBA at idle is rather loud for a power supply. It's up to OP whether that's an issue for them. And I've seen many complains of the semi passive mode - After a period of the fan turned off, as heat builds up, the fan suddenly sky rockets, even at low loads.

Agreed on the OTP and OPP - combined, they're configured on the high side.
BUT, I guess on the flip side, since they'll warranty the unit 7-10 years (Depending on capacity).... that's not anticipated to be much of an issue. I don't believe that's even changed much from the G2 units IIRC......

Admittedly, I've only skimmed the review a couple of times.... but I don't see where the 12V rail goes out of spec, despite the high OPP.
There is a statement "it should kick in at around 120-125% of the maximum-rated capacity to keep the +12V rail within spec" so I assume I'm just missing where it's referring back to.

Admittedly on the noise front, there's a mis-step there on the fan curve. It's very much an all or nothing approach.
Saying that though, the "worst case" noice <40dBa+/- is in line with most of the RMx units at load too.

Regardless, I'd recommended the G3 on the back of a price/quality. Canadian prices on units like the RMx or SeaSonic Focus+ Gold are ~25% markup vs the G3.... something I don't feel is warranted.

FWIW, I don't think the lower wattage Whisper units (550W etc) are available in Canada, full stop. The higher stuff is, but I think they were >$200* last I checked.

*The 750W unit is $165 these days.

where the 12V rail goes out of spec, despite the high OPP.

The components in the PSU are built for the power supply’s wattage rating. If they exceed their ratings, voltage delivery can go out of spec. Out of spec voltages can kill components in your system, which is why the long warranty doesn’t help too much in this case.

Seems like the Bitfenix whispers have suddenly gone out of stock in America, never seemed to be available in Canada.

The Formula is a very good power supply, though lacking modularity.

So there aren’t many options for $90 - $100 besides the EVGA G3, which is still much better than the EVGA B3.
