Need to switch AntiVirus ASAP

So, I recently purchased an Alienware 15 to use as a school/gaming setup, and my dad's condition was to install McAfee....... He ran that years ago and thought it the best setup, however its bogging down my system and setting off VAC on my steam games. Whats the best alternative????

Bitdefender is a great alternative; I really love this antivirus.

I would go with either Norton 360 or the free Microsoft Security Essentials. I would add Spybot Search and Destroy9free program0 as it is better at detecting and removing Trojans.

Bitdefender, Webroot, and Kaspersky are all great. Kaspersky, however, seems biased against external hard drives for some reason.
