need to transfer some info from my laptop HD to my new desktop my

my laptop recently died on me and I don't want to lose all the information that was one the laptop. the laptop HD has the same connectors as my desktop HD, so will I be able to hook up the laptop HD to my desktop and transfer the files I want? also will I be able to use the laptop HD as a secondary storage device once I am able to wipe it clean?

ps, what sort of part do I need to have it secured in my case?
