Ok so I built my first new built a few months ago, and not until recently I was becoming annoyed with my monitor. I took it from our old family desktop that wasnt needed anymore, so it is a few years behind on the times (Samsung SyncMaster P2050). So I ask you can you suggest me a new monitor for roughly £150 maybe give or take a few ££ either side of that figure.

I did look around the forum at some of the monitors being suggested but none really interested. I noticed this suggested though and it did catch my eye:

Samsung SyncMaster S24A300BL LCD LED 23.6" Monitor
Max Resolution: 1920 x 1080 Full HD
- Contrast Ratio: 1000:1 / 5000000:1 (dynamic)
- Image Brightness: 250 cd/m2
- Response Time: 5 ms
- Signal Input: DVI-D, VGA

I have a i2500k cpu and two GTX 560ti TOP cards in sli and game quite a bit so is imperative I get as good a gaming monitor for the price im willing to spend, so what can you guys suggest for me? That monitor worth a look or are there better out there? Intending on using the monitor for GAMING so response time needs to be minimal. Cheers!

thats about $238usd

in that range you are most likely looking at a tn panel. if you catch a good sale you just might be able to get an e-ips panel.

tn panels have fast response times and are the only panels which support 120hz currently (if you buy one that supports it). tn panels offer very narrow display angles and can color shift when viewed at an angle.

e-ips panels dont have the response times and only come in 50/60hz but have an almost 180 degree viewing angle making them desireable.

for your budget 1920x1080 is probably what you are looking at. 1920x1200 might be out of reach.

that monitor will work but i'd rather see you with an e-ips or at least another brand besides samsung. your choice though.

Hmm well over here I had found one for £149 but oh well...

I have come here for recommendations so if anyone has some of monitors they own or have used it would be greatly received. Tbh I would be able to stretch to around £200 as after browsing a little have seen very limited monitors I would like sub £150.

Anything to get me off 1600x900 is worth my time, cheers!

You are looking at two different currencies, $220 = about 149 in your money.

Don't know how much the Dell UltraSharp series are where you live, but that model range tends to win a lot of monitor comparisons although the price is a bit higher than mainstream monitors.

I looked at no such currencies, the first guy to reply posted in $ I have maintained £'s throughout. I will look into these though, what are they boasting that others are not for their price?

It seemed when he stated that's about $238 you said you found one for 150 pounds which is the same thing.

There are quite a few monitor comparisons with the UltraSharp, it's all image quality, color range, viewing angle.

They do start pretty high in price though, but prior year or generation models go on sale often.

Hmm I found a couple that seemed pretty good, albeit one was £238 🙁 However a trend I am noticing is 8ms response times on these. Pretty sure that makes these undesirable for gaming?

Should be fine, I use a S-IPS screen and never see anything to make me want a faster response time. Keep in mind that many vendors rate their response time in different ways, just like contrast ratio. That's why you see 2 ms 100,000,000 contrast ratio monitors for $100, they rate them under a full moon using tests that only occur in nature every 4 million years during a prayer meeting of vodoo doctors.

Ahahaha! Yeah was told about companies bias towards their own specs. Hmm what do you recommend to look into for a monitor? This one im using is so bloody old and not suitable for what I want to play, its even still using VGA o_0

"thats about $238usd"

meaning i did a conversion for simplicity of anyone else looking into this post and for my own reference. quite a few of us here are from america and might not be familiar with the GPB.

i agree with the dell ultrasharps. definitely good monitors from what i've heard of them on here.

i have a 16ms monitor and it doesnt ghost or lag. anything less than 16ms fine in generally fine. 8ms response time is good enough for even the fastest paced games you can play.

companies are biased and tests are nonstandard across the board. you can not believe any of them without assuming a huge margin of error.

Well, the Dell UltraSharp models for one, but try to find a sale on older models.

Samsung is good, HannsG

For image quality though, can't really beat the UltraSharp models.

Ok guys il give it a look doubt many place will have these on sale at the moment though sadly ;_; Looking forward to upgrading from 1600x900 and VGA like you wouldn't believe

I have not used that model, but that is a good monitor. From the reviews on the site, there is at least one that talks about "ghosting" in games, but everyone else states no issues. I have never seen an issue with games or movies on a good monitor even if it had a 12ms response time.

I have a monitor with a similar screen (but an NEC that's a bit higher-end) and it is fine for me, wife and son also never complained about any games we play on it, from C&C to WoW to Skyrim, etc...

I'd go for it, if you use a TN monitor now, you will be amazed by how much better a nice IPS screen looks like without any other changes in video setup.

You may want to poke around for prices for other UltraSharp models, usually Dell has specials on their web site. I don't remember the lowest I have seen these for, but that price seems like the regular price for that model.

Well Dell has it for £310 for 'standard home use' and £259 under their business section. Looks like overclockers is the cheapest place so far for it. Will look around for some coupons and such for it I suppose!
