Need upgrade advice from Abit BH6 rev 1.01

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out what the "best" upgrade for me would be at the moment. I have Celeron 450 on Abit BH6 rev 1.01 (Slot 1). I also have Radeon 64 which is kinda strangled by weak CPU. So I'd like to get more CPU power. I think I can spend as much as needed, but I'd like to get just enough to let my Radeon work.

I have considered the following options for upgrade:
1. Celeron 766 or 800 - don't really like it because Celerons suck IMHO :)
2. P3 750 - this I can get for $145 shipped - but is it wise to get 100 FSB CPU when you can get 133 FSB CPU for the same money
3. P3 850 - this is about $200
4. But for the same $200 I could get TB 800 on Epox 8KTA3+
5. Or I could step up a bit and get TB 1.2 on this Epox for $300 - in this case I'd also need to upgrade my 250W PSU

Now the concerns:
1. I'd like to get a "balanced" system, so I'm not sure if I need TB 1.2
2. I'm afraid a little by AMD/VIA "problems", yes, there are some and I don't want to spend my time applying parches every day... my Intel system is 100% stable now I want my PC to be this way even if it means less speed.
3. I don't think I need all "features" of a new motherboard, because I have 2x AGP onboard, separate PCI ATA 100 controller, 2 USB ports, etc. Is there anything I could potentially benefit from getting a new motherboard?
4. I will definitely upgrade to AMD DDR platform when things stabilize a little. It might be when Palomino and Windows XP ship. So P3 750 might be the best choice for me, as there are no games on the market that currently attract me (Doom3 is not there yet)

Now what I do on my computer. Well, I do not think I demand a lot of power. I do not play "bleeding edge" games, I didn't even play Q3 :( But I'd like to be able to play some games at reasonable frame rates, that's why I got Radeon.

So if you could solve my dilemma :) I'd be very happy.

I your case I would prob. suggest the PIII, if it ain't broke don' t fix it....

if at first you don't succeed , destroy all evidence that you ever tried...

You can get an Asus A7V133 with an Athlon 900MHz for about $225, shipping included. Search http://www.pricewatch.com for 'A7V133 with cpu 900MHz'. I can't speak for the Epox motherboard, but the Asus A7V133 has been absolutely rock solid for me. You'll probably want to budget another $100 for 256MB of CL2 PC133 SDRAM, too, since memory has a large impact on system performance.
