ok, so i for one went from an i5-2500, to an i7-3770 a while back, and now ive recently started hosting a minecraft server, aswell as playing on the same pc, and watching netflix and a few other things on here, ive been maxing out my ram aswell as getting close to maxing out my cpu, so i am pretty sure im needing an upgrade here, ive got 16 gb ddr3 ram, aswell as a gtx 1060 6gb (never maxed this out before so i dont think i need an upgrade), ive been looking at this motherboard and cpu combo for an i5-9600k which would reduce my thread count by 2 but also give me two more cores, so im not sure what the best way to go about this would be. Any suggestions?

(my budget is around $300, also already have ram)

since price is almost familiar each other, i would recommend you to get an i5 10400F + any budget H410M or 4 slot B460M Motherboard, that would be better or wait for a while since ddr5 is coming, and all the ddr4 should drop the price slowly. also you would need a ddr4 ram, since youre hosting then invest some money on ram (if the mc server use lots of ram).

thanks a ton!!

oh dang that's much better, that even gives me more threads to work with at the same price
you could wait until economy around the world is better, just dont rush it now. if you like second hand, try to look on ryzen 5 3600 or ryzen 7 3700x, or if you dont care abt fps (like most fps gamer does) and a b550 motherboard (u could use b450 too, main difference is pcie 4 and better ram compability), ryzen 5 2600 or 7 2700x should be bang for the buck, using a b450 motherboard, pretty cheap for a server that handles alot of threading. also to add note, faster ram on ryzen better performance on overall, 3600mhz should be the sweetspot for 3000 series, and 3200/3466 for 2000 series.

ok yeah i actually was just talking to my pc guy about this, he tells me that ryzen would probably be a better option if i got a 2600 so i can also overclock

overclocking headroom is not that much compared to intel but it is already a better cpu than core i series in overall. Ryzen 5 3600 and a good B550M motherboard could overclock really well.
yeah you have to keep in mind though my budget here is $300 max, so i think im going to go with the i5 10400
