Question Neither PC reads new HDD

So I have 2 PCs right. One of them has a nvme, and a hdd for gaming.

The second one only has a nvme at the moment. Been trying to add a hdd with no luck. The PC won't read it at all. Even tried it on my other PC that already has a hdd, but even that one won't read it.

I don't even feel it spinning or anything. What could be the issue? Any suggestions? If cables are needed, which ones would be best?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and most importantly for helping me. Much appreciated.

For many motherboards, using an NVMe drive will disable one or more SATA ports.

Details of the systems needed.

Processor is AMD 5 5600 6 core, 12 thread.

Motherboard is Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC AM4 AMD B550 Sata 6Gb/s micro atx AMD Motherboard

RAM is silicon power value gaming ddr4 ram 32 gb 3200mhz 288 pin CL 16 1.35v

Storage is western digital black SN770 M.2 2280 1TB PCIe Gen4

PS: this is third hdd I have bought and tried, and it didn't read none of them. Even tried them on my gaming PC with no luck either. Keep in mind that I already have an hdd on my gaming PC, but it didn't read any of the 3 hdd's I tried.

What model hard drive did you buy? I'll echo the comment that it sounds like it could be a Power Disable issue.
It is a Western Digital WD Blue 4TB 3.5 inch 6 Gb/s sata hard drive

If it is the power disable issue, how do I fix it. I didn't really understand anything in that link posted.

It sounds like your HDD isn't getting power or is faulty. Here are some quick checks:

1. Ensure the power and SATA cables are securely connected.
2. Try different SATA power and data cables.
3. Check if the HDD appears in BIOS.
4. Look for the HDD in Windows Disk Management.

If it still doesn't work, the HDD might be dead.
HDD doesn't show up in Bios or disk management.

This is 3rd HDD I have bought and none have worked. Doubt all 3 were DOA. Though it could happen I guess.

Can't be cable since in my gaming PC it picks up my HDD, but didn't pick up any of the new 3 I bought.

I will change cables just in case.

Here's another explanation. Basically, since SATA specification 3.2+, they have repurposed pin 3 to disable/shut off newer SATA drives, because almost no drives in recent history used +3.3v anyway and they wanted a way to sleep the disk through the power connector only . If you have a new HDD but old PSU then the drive will never spin up.

If you have orange wires on your SATA power plug then you will need to either cut them or at least the wire to pin 3, or use a 4-pin Molex-to-SATA power adapter (since Molex has no 3.3v at all). Or if your old PSU is of questionable quality anyway, replace the PSU.

This of course assumes you have properly plugged the power cable into the drive--that should normally spin the drive up even with no data cable attached.

Sorry taken so long to reply.

I just thought of something. When I was building the PC it wouldn't power up cause the connectors to the GPU weren't from the PSU I had bought. New ones were red and my bro didn't like them, so used older ones I had.

Long story short, it didn't work till I used the connectors that came with the PSU. Could that be the issue here? If so, where do I get extra connectors for this PSU?

Thanks!

Oh my.
Never ever mix PSU cables between brands. Or often, even within the same brand.

Doing this often leads to releasing the magic smoke.

Never ever.

Any new cables or whatever...you get from the manufacturer and only the manufacturer

Oh yes, using the wrong cable even once can easily fry any HDD, rendering it inoperable on any PC afterwards. Unlike the GPU, it's not such a large dead-short that the PSU refuses to power-on.
Since the hdd didn't work on my PC, I'm guessing it was probably fried when I connected it on the other PC with different connectors?

So now I need to return it, and get in touch with the PSU manufacturer so I can get more connectors? That about sums it up.
