I don't get the whole hype around Netflix.
So i changed my VPN to an american server (im in Europe) to sign for a month subscription and i found Netflix to be a total useless service, at least for me.
There are tons of movies, even old ones, that aren't on Netflix. Same goes for many tv shows.
I don't know if something changes when you pay for an year subscription and you get some extra stuff, but as it was, i totally didn't like it.

People get Netflix because it is extremely cheap, there are no commercials and they have a decent amount of videos. There is a lot more to watch on Netflix than on cable, while Netflix is like $9/month and cable is over $100/month.

The only thing of interest that Netflix doesn't have is sports. If they got that, cable would be pointless.

Even heavy torrent users have Netflix subscriptions just because it is so cheap and simple. Also the quality of Netflix videos is usually better than that of torrents.

What are you talking about? Most of the shows aren't even on Netflix. Same goes for the movies. Even movies that are years old, aren't there.
About the quality....well, by the time a certain tv show or movie is on Netflix, i'll be having 1080p blu ray quality from those same torrent users you said about.
I won't even comment on the netflix / cable comparison.....
Are you sure you aren't working for Netflix?

anybody who is moaning about the fact that netflix doesn't have every movie ever doesn't understand the concept of netflix. It doesn't aim to have every movie ever.

10 years ago would you walk into your local video store and shit on the desk because they didn't have a copy of "Old Yeller" and it was a movie that was made at one point in time?

If you want a copy of whatever movie you can't find on netflix, then buy a copy of that movie. They don't and simply can't have a catalogue of every movie ever released. Yeah it sucks when we couldn't watch Gremlins on halloween, but guess what, the video store didn't have it either, and they would have charged us half what it costs for a month of netflix to have one movie for 3 days.

It's apples and oranges. Netflix is more akin to a television or cable replacement for the passive movie/television watcher. I can sit down at my leisure, browse around until I find a show I want to watch, and watch it. It does suck that they don't upload the shows soon after they are aired (it would be awesome if that changed) but just as you would have to wait for a movie to clear theatres before being released on DVD, you have to wait for TV shows to finish their run of the season before appearing on netflix.

It's not at all a bad service, but it's not perfect. It has, however, replaced our cable and cut our bills down a fair bit without any overall loss of convenience in our lives (and on the flip side, the chance to watch entire SERIES of shows, old and new, at our leisure.)
