Internet was working but smart TV couldn't get internet. Tried reset, now power button flashing. Before I tried it I noticed light by smart TV port was orange, not green. Now I get nothing. Tried using net genie but it says computer not connected to router, but it is. Downloaded firmware update but can't go to router login because I can't connect through router. . No idea what to do.

Okay Melissa, My name is Tom by the way.

On the wired computer if you type 192.168.1.1 does it ask for a password ?

if so try admin and password and see if you get in, those are usually netgear defaults.

you can then look on the setup screen and follow the wizard if you can get in.

What it sounds like is the router is what is referred to as bricked. What this means is the firmware is somehow damaged. It also means there is no OS or anything to talk to you when you try to connect.

Luckily netgear has a recovery feature but it requires you to have a tftp client on your machine to transfer the image..

If you go to netgear site and search for bricked router or firmware recovery you will find pretty good instructions.

If it refuses to recover...which can happen if the flash went bad or some other hardware failure your router is now as useful as a brick which is why they use that term for firmware failures.

I've been to netgear site and downloaded the firmware. The problem comes when I follow their instructions to go to router logon, but since the router can't see the internet and my pc can't see the router I can't complete the process. Netgear wanted $80 to talk me through it. I can't spend that kind of money. I just brought my husband home from surgery and he's out of work for months of recovery. There is no extra money for something like that.

Since you presumably never flashed new firmware, it may be that you can get it to reboot normally. Yes, holding the reset button puts it in a mode to accept new firmware, but doesn't actually erase anything. I had a similar incident on mine once with a blinking orange and no way to flash it. try the following and see if it will reboot normally or you still get orange:

Turn the router off unplug it from the AC adapter and depress the reset button for 1 second. Plug it back in and turn it on and wait about 5 minutes.

If you do still get orange you need to download the firmware onto a working computer and physically hook it up via the yellow wire between the computers ethernet port and one of the LAN ports on the router (not the YELLOW wan port).

then you follow that guide I posted and it should restore it. If you are still stuck let me know and we will figure it out.

I was able to update the firmware thankso to your link. However, I got an ssl security certificate notice and it wouldn't connect. I updated Firefox and it worked at least on one pc, but it is wired.wireless won't work

Okay, at least we are getting somewhere Melissa. Glad to help. If it's taking too long, i'd be glad to give you my Skype handle or we can keep going if you like, your preference.

If I understand correctly, you have internet now on the wired computer, and it works normally.

You have NO internet on the wireless side of things, is this right ?

It's late I've been at this 8 hours. net genie can't detect router, not modem. When I connect directly to modem I have Internet but connect to router I don't. Power button green, Internet button orange, 2.4 green, 5 Ghz blue, port 1 orange, port 2 green, port 4 orange. WiFi green. No flashing.

okay, 2 questions...

who is your ISP, and is the cord from your Modem back in the yellow WAN port on the router ? It should be. Then there should be another one of the non yellow lan ports going to the wired computer.

From there you should have your wired computer set like this, unless you changed a setting in the router.

Your wired computer is usually set to obtain an ip address automatically and by default the router is set to give ip addresses, that is the next things to check after the cables. From there we get into the router and make sure it's talking correctly to the modem.

I am sorry this is taking a long time, I do this all the time here and I am sure it's fixable :)

Since I haven't heard back I will tell you about the wifi issue...IF i recall correctly, wifi stays disablef for security reasons until you complete the router setup.

It's easy if you are wired to the router like I said and you are set to automatically obtain an ip address. you need to look at that under your network adapters. Go to control panel in windows, and if you are in category view go to "View network status and tasks" or If you see a lot of icons select, "network and sharing center".

Look on the left then click change adapter settings, thenselect your ethernet connection once so it is highlighted blue, right click it and select properties. A box will come up and in the window under, "This connection used the following items:"

double click on the line itself with internet protocol version 4 (tcp/ipv4) and another window opens. Make sure the dot is to the left of Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server addresses automatically.

your wired computer should be able to get into the router then by typing 192.168. 1.1

user: admin
pass😛assword

If you can do all this then your almost done.

you should then be able to see if the router is seeing internet from the modem. If not there are a couple ways to proceed.

Either go to the administration page and restore the default SETTINGS (NOT FIRMWARE) and then when you try to use the internet on the wired computer the wizard should finish and activate the internet and wifi.

There is another manual way also, but this is the easiest.
