Hello,
I never really checked my internet speed using speed test but recently I am surprised at the results, and how low they are. I upgraded my internet speeds so I get up to 300Mbps. I have had ISP out here and test their equipment which gets up to 300Mbps. So, obviously, you would look to the wireless router as the culprit. I originally had an 8 yr old Cisco n router hooked up which had max ratings up to 100Mbps. This wasn't an issue as my speeds previously were 15Mbps.
I switched it out with the router I am now using which is a Netgear N300 WRN 2000 V4. 4 Yrs old, but its all I have at the moment.
On wireless computers, using speed test, I get no higher than 20Mbps download and sometimes higher upload speeds than download speeds. It fluctuates and normally is around 8Mbps average speeds. The Upload speed is almost always HIGHER than the download speed which is something I have never seen in my life. This is just for wireless devices being tested.
On wired computers, I get up to 90Mbps, but it always fluctuates and goes as low as 5Mbps.
In either case, it isn't consistent, and also in both cases, I should be getting much higher speeds.
From my understanding of the router product guide and specs, It can handle up to 300Mpbs.
I am thinking that maybe there is a setting or settings I need to change in order to get the full speeds(or at least better speeds).
A couple of things I have changed, if I recall correctly, I changed the Channel setting from Auto to 11. There are maybe 2 wireless routers used by neighbors on both sides of my house, with moderate signal strength, so I am not sure if there is interference or not. I havn't tested other channels but I assume if they have their routers on auto channel, and I set mine manually, then theirs won't use the channel I am on, right? Or is it just randomly selected by the router itself so in theory, they could be on my channel?
I also changed the one settings from auto to 300Mbps. The only other option was 150Mbps. I can't remember the option name. I will have to go back in the interface and look.
Do you think I just need to get a newer router as the Netgear is atleast 4 years old? If there are any settings I can change to fix this please let me know. I appreciate any help you can give.
Just for an FYI, I work in Information Technology but networking isn't my speciality so I am really at a standstill. I honestly think that for 300Mbps speeds, I need a medium business class switch to be able to handle that kind of throughput. I don't want to spend a lot of money so any model/make suggestions would be nice if that is the solution route to take.
On a side note, there is always at least 2 LAN computers streaming videos 24x7, a LAN Linux server I run which handles very small amounts of traffic and 2 cell phones that use the wireless network. As you can imagine, 5 - 20 Mbps isn't cutting it and it is making me annoyed.
