Netgear N600 & 2Wire

Do these two routers have to work together? My son is in college & the only way he could get on the Internet is hooking up to an Ethernet, so he asked me if I could send him a router for his room. Well, we used both 2Wire & Netgear N600 for the whole house & since he only needed it for his room, I decided to only send him the Netgear N600, but my bro doesn't think it'll work without the 2Wire. Is that true?? Otherwise, I think I should just send him the 2Wire (could that work by itself??) Thanks for any help... I'm really lost when it comes to technology

If all he is trying to do is go online on the college's internet with only one device, then he just needs a network card. His PC will most likely already have an ethernet adapter on it. All he needs to do is plug an ethernet cable from the the PC's ethernet port into the wall. If his PC or laptop does not have an ethernet adapter card, he will need to get one. They come in PCI, PCIe and even USB. Almost every PC and laptop has them built in though.

The only reason to use a router is to connect a bunch of PCs to the same connection. Basically it is like a powerstrip to share the same ethernet socket. Is he trying to use the router to create a wifi connection? If so, the netgear should work.

Yes, he wants to connect wirelessly. He has a MacBook Air, so I actually had to get him an adapter to hook up an Ethernet. He'd also like to wirelessly connect his 5s, since his cellular network is pretty bad in Santa Cruz. So you think the netgear router will do the job without the 2wire?
