Netgear router+modem combo -- lightning wired but abysmal wi-fi speeds

I have a Netgear C3000 router+modem combo unit with Comcast as my ISP. The wired speed is lightning fast, over 223 down and 15 up!

But using the same device in the same location over WI-FI I am getting only 6 down and 1 up. Across the house in my room where I do most of my work the speeds are even worse.

Any ideas what can be causing this? I quickly browsed Amazon reviews and a few customers mentioned router+modem units are notorious for slow WI-FI speeds and to use the modem and router separately instead.

Is this true? If so, my question is: Can I use my existing combo unit as a router and buy a separate modem? Or use the combo unit as a modem and buy a separate router? If so, what would be the best setup?

You would want to use the existing device as only a modem and buy a new router or you could buy a new router and turn off the wireless in the netgear and use the new router only as a AP.

It is strange that the speed it that low when you are near the unit. Even very poor devices run faster than that. You should get 50m on devices that claim 300m. To go faster both your end device and the router must support the faster protocols and things like number of antenna. If you are lucky you might get it to 200m.

You problem may be your end device, you need to test that on some other routers if you can. Also be aware that wireless speed is greatly impacted by other people using wireless near you so if there are a lot everyone will take fairly large decreases in the speed they can run the equipment.

The end device is fine. I got a new router and use the combo unit as a modem only and now the wi-fi speed is 226 down.
