Netgear WG511T Connectivity Issues with WGT624

I am running Windows XP Pro SP1a with three accounts. One of them is
an Administrator account and the other two are Power Users. The issue
I'm having is specifically with using WPA encryption though a similiar
issue is also occuring with WEP.

Using the Netgear Configuration Utility under the Administrator
account, it works fine. If I then go and log into one of the other
accounts, I can not select that profile even though it is saved. I
can not save a new entry as well on these other accounts, so I either
have to configure it everytime I want to use it on them and Apply, or
try using the Wireless Zero Configuration Utility.

Using the Wireless Zero Configuration Utility, works until I reboot
with WPA. I have the Microsoft HotFix: Q815485 applied, so WPA-PSK
with TKIP is an option. Again this works until I reboot, then when I
login I see the Netgear Utility blinking green/red. It will lock into
a connection for a few seconds and then scan other channels again. I
have tried using 128Bit WEP encryption on the router as well and the
Wireless Zero Configuration Utility, and the issue is slightly
different. It takes a while for the connection to be establish, then
it reports it can no get an IP address from the router.

What is the best way to get around this? Is there a user group
besides Administrators in Windows XP I can add these two other users
to so they can access the profile created by the Administrator in the
Netgear Utility?

Currently, I am just using a Wireless MAC filter to only allow those
wireless devices that I know of to connect to the router, but I would
prefer to have atleast some sort of encryption on. Any help would be
most appreciated.

Did you take a look at the NETGEAR support at
http://kbserver.netgear.com/support_details.asp?dnldID=681 ?

You have not stated whether you are using a laptop or desktop.

Assuming you are using the WG511T (in a laptop) then support for
non-admin accounts in XP has been added in the latest firmware/driver
updates - see the link kindly posted by K Anderson. If you are
running anything prior to this (v3.6.0 - 15 Apr 04) there is no
support for non-admin accounts in the Netgear GUI. I suggest you
update to the latest firmware.

If you are using a desktop, presumably with the WG311T, the situation
is exactly the same so try downloading v3.3.0 (18 Jun 04).

The non "T" variants of these devices (i.e. WG511, WG311) still offer
no support for non-admin accounts in the Netgear GUI.

Yes, this is on my laptop. I have installed the April. 15, 2004.
Perhaps I didn't completely remove it before though I believe I have.
I have verified using their utility that it is using the 3.6.x version
of the drivers, and yet I can not access the settings saved from the
Administrator account.

When they say XP Limited Account, do they mean all accounts that
aren't Administrators?

Thanks for your help,
Rob

On re-reading the support information, I am guessing that they mean
only the "user" level (or "limited" as XP calls it) account. I say
that because in Win2k they list a complete subset of the non-admin
accounts but in XP only the two options.

It's really not that well thought out. It could be worse, I use the
WG511 and it does not support anything other than an administrator
account. And my WG311 cannot be configured for WPA without using the
XP interface. But now every time I start the computer the Netgear GUI
tries to take over and I have click "no" to having it assume control.
Everything takes twice as long and its a right pain. The whole point
of putting wireless connection into the desktop is so it can be moved
into the attic and free up the bedroom it currently occupies for
things like guests!

If you're using Windows XP, you can do the following to prevent
Netgear from assuming control. Click START, RUN and then type
"msconfig" and hit the ENTER key. THe last tab should be named
STARTUP. Uncheck the box that reference your Netgear info. Click
apply or okay at the bottom. Your change(s) will take effect after
you rebbot your computer.

I completely removed the Netgear WG511T software and upgraded it again
to the latest version. I also removed the Microsoft update: Q815485
for WPA encryption. I added all the other users on the laptop to be
in the Users group. Still they can not access the Netgear Utility
profile options saved under the Administrator account. Still waiting
to hear back from Netgear on what they consider the XP Limited Account
to be.

I must admit I am starting to find this whole thing rather
frustrating. The WG311T and the WG311(v1) both appear to support
WPA-PSK in the Netgear GUI whereas the WG311(v2) does not support it.

Further, according to the support website anyway, they both appear to
support "limited" accounts, whereas the WG311(v2) does not.

Netgear have already released yet another update for the WG511,
although I have yet to see any significant difference. I was having
severe problems getting logged onto my own network, although seemingly
it was not the router at all but the WG511 getting into a spaz over
the WPA key.

I suspect, from what you say, that support for the "limited account"
in XP means precisely that - limited accounts and nothing else. If
you look at the list of support for Win2k you'll see that backup
operators and power users etc are listed separately and you own
experience seems to suggest it means exactly it what it says and
nothing more.

I'd be interested to know what Netgear's response is.

Limited Accounts isn't too descriptive by Netgear. I would figure it
would be either a Power User or just a member of the User's group.
However, it doesn't seem to be the case. Certainly is frustrating not
being able to use their utility on any other account than the
Administrator or a user in the Administrators group.

Just spoke to Netgear - I too have been battling with understanding why
profiles saved as admin are not available to non admin users (given
that non admin users can not create profiles for themselves either).

In my case I am using w2k rather than xp but the problem is the same.
What makes it worse for me is that zero config is not an option. This
was a first time wireless install using the new version 3.6 software
which as u see from the release notes supports different account types
in both w2k and xp.

I spoke to somebody on support (outsourced - India I think). After
working through her extensive troubleshooting flowchart ;-) she could
only suggest the software will only work with xp.......silly! but after
a similar coversation with the supervisor I gave in and dropped the
phone. To see others with the same problem with xp gives me new
hope........I will try the support line again!

Please let me know if there are any further developments/workarounds I
will do the same.

Unless it means literally "limited" accounts which is the terminology
used by the "friendly face" of XP to describe standard user accounts.

Of course, start hacking open the OS using things the MMC and start to
gain full control of the possibilities afforded by use of other groups
such as power users and backup operators etc. Unfortunately this
seems to be completely lost on Netgear. Savvy users of a computer
full admin privilege can quite easily change permissions on things
they are not meant to see basically do what they want. I resent being
forced to give administrative powers to end users.

That said, I have finally got the latest update to the WG511 to
function on a limited account, albeit with a bit of screwing around.
This is fine if you only want to keep re-connecting to the same
network but a total mess if you want do actually take your laptop out
and about (!) and wish to use public access points etc.

How such shortcomings can be lost on Netgear beats me but I should be
thankful for the small mercies I suppose!

The problem is the same in XP.

The non Administrator accounts can not access any of the profiles
created by an Administrator. I can set it up manually using a
non-Administrator account, and it'll work until I logout since I don't
have the option to save.

The Wireless Zero Configuration utility doesn't help much either. For
whatever reason, WPA-PSK with TKIP upon reboot causes the connection
to be iffy for me. It continually connects and then disconnects over
and over again making any sort of use of it nil.

Right now, I'm using the Wireless Zero Configuration Utility with no
encryption, wireless mac addresses filtered to the ones I specified,
and hiding the SSID. It's really not any sort of protection. If I
understand how a wireless works, everything is broadcasted like it
would be on an ethernet hub, and the destination nic picks it up all
others drop the packet. In this mode, sniffing my wireless connection
should be a cinch.

Has anyone tried to find out where Netgear stores these profiles in
the registry? Perhaps you can import them to the limited
non-Administrator accounts.

Here is the response from Netgear:

A "Limited" user is not allowed to install any new hardware, change
the network setup and can not create new User-accounts. Please note
that the "Limited" account is on Windows XP Professional defined as
being member of the group "Users". You can find a more detailed
description at the follwoing link:

http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxphusrm.htm

Please create such a account and then install the adapter.

------------------------------------------------------

It really wasn't too descriptive as to whether these "Limited"
accounts as they put it will be able to access the network profiles
created by the Administrator account using THEIR configuration
utility.

I remember trying it before, and had no luck with it.

I must admit I am still staggered by the fact that Netgear have such
difficulty sorting out getting their hardware to work in "limited"
accounts. In a corporate environment it is bordering the unthinkable
to have end users given administrator level priviledges to their
computers and even with the advancing popularity of wireless I am sure
corporate users still make up the vast majority of wireless users.

I believe I fixed this issue.

- I installed Windows XP SP2.

- I removed the AEGIS Protocol(IEEE 802.1x) v2.3.1.9 from Wireless
Network Connection Properties and rebooted then readded it.

- Set my network to use WPA-PSK on the router and WPA-PSK with TKIP on
the WG511T pc card.

- Removed the Netgear wireless utility (Gear511.exe) from Windows
startup:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

- Under Device Manager for the WG511T pc card, I changed the 802.11
Authentication Type from Auto to Shared and hit OK. Then I changed it
to Open and again hit OK, and finally switched it back to Auto.

*the WG511T pc card has the latest drivers installed.

Forget the support.

I recently (30 min ago) had this Administrator on Win2000 problem too
and found following solution:
Download and install current drivers.
Set up wg311t.exe as admin until it works there. Drink some beer for
better karma.
Download FireDaemon which allows to run any prog as service.
Remove gear311t.exe from reg:software/microsoft/windows/current
version/run.
Kill possibly running gear311t.exe. (Yeah! Kill! Kill! Kill!)
Install FireDaemon, in FireDeamon, install gear311t.exe. On the second
pane, select Logon as Administrator, enter admin passwd twice. Set
Parameter -hide for gear311t.exe.
Check in the first pane if gear311t.exe now is running as service.
Reboot, login as lawless user. Should work. Drink more beer.

Works now for more than 30 minutes!
I was so screwed up I don't want to wait longer until telling the
solution.
Maybe tomorrow this is gone. Then I'll go for a 3com card and try
again.
BTW, Trust cards have the same problem.

Maybe, the Netgear people don't know the concept of more than 1 user
per computer. However, if all developers would have IQ>20, who would
pay "real programmers"?

So long,
