I just got charter internet service with a Cisco DPC3008 Cable Modem. I'm trying to connect a Netgear Wireless N150 Access Point (WN604) to the modem and its not working. I just cant seem to get the IP address information correct or something. I know the IP, subnet and default gateway of the cable modem from using IPconfig. Now what do i use this for because i have been trying a bunch of different things and nothing seems to work. I hook up the AP to my computer and change the ip to the same as the gateway but a different last number but nothing is working. Could it be something with the DHCP server option, i just really have no clue. I'm pretty much paying for internet that i cant use because everything in my house runs off wireless, except my desktop at the moment but it is suppose to be on a different floor with a wireless card.

If you have the devices you state you won't be able to get it to work you need a router.

The modem in general will only allow a single IP address behind it. This is assigned to the first PC you plug in or to a router if you have it. Your AP only has its own IP address and that is really only used to manage and configure the device.

You will need to place a router between the modem and your other devices. You can still plug your AP into the router to provide a second wireless network if you want....I suppose you could buy a router without wireless but they are hard to find.

This makes a little more sense. The wireless access point i bought from my college to use in an on campus apartment, there was no modem involved, just a wall outlet connection directly to the access point.
