I have windows 7 ultimate N 64 bit, upgraded from win7 32 bit on a dell inspiron 14r n4110 and i have three big problems.

1. My network controller is non-functional, I couldn't find the appropriate drivers. I absolutely need Wifi on my laptop.

2. Less serious but still a pain in the @ss, My screen resolution is limited to 1024 by 768. I have no catalyst software to fix this.

3. Most likely associated with problem no.2, windows aero is disabled and windows basic looks very ugly.

And please don't tell me to update the driver software from device manager properties, its as useless as magikarp's splash! How do I fix them? How?

Assuming it is listing the Wifi adapter under "Other Devices" in the Device Manager, can you:

  • Right Click the "Network Controller" listed
    Go to Properties
    Go to Details
Under the Property dropdown, go to Hardware Ids
Copy the top Value and paste it [strike]here[/strike] as a reply

It would seem that getting wifi working will help move the other issues along, unless you are wired in for internet atm.

All dells have a Service Tag ID number, whether its on a sticker or in the bios. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04?c=us&l=en&~ck=mn you can ether type in your ID number or just use the detect and it will pull up all the drivers for your computer.

After dell figures out what your computer is by tag ID or auto detect it will direct you to a new webpage. Click on drivers and download, you can ether look for window 7 x64 drivers or at the top use the auto detect drivers needed and it will install the latest drivers for the computer.

There are 2 choices there. One from Dell, and the other from AMD. I would suggest the AMD link first. But I'll put the Dell link too

AMD:
https://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/legacy?product=legacy3&os=Windows%207%20-%2064

Dell:
https://downloads.dell.com/video/R309740.exe

This is a link to the Hardware Id search engine I was using to identify the hardware: http://driverzone.com/node/181
In the future, you can use that Hardware Id technique to identify hardware that isn't detected by Windows. Sometimes it may require a bit more digging, but you know how it's done now.

Although the installation was a success (no errors) and I restarted the computer, Windows still cant have aero theme and the resolution still limited to 1024 by 768. Anything I missed?
