My network adapter stopped working recently and I'm not totally sure why. It used to work just fine even after I updated to windows 8.1 but I stopped using it for about 3 months and now it doesn't work seemingly due to an outdated/incompatible driver.

My motherboard (which the network adapter is connected to) is a evga 111-CD-E630. The network adapter itself is an Intel(R) 82577LC Gigabit Network Connection. It's a hardwire and I tried connecting it directly to the modem without success. In the device manager it has a small ! inside a yellow sign and says

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)

{Operation Failed}
The requested operation was unsuccessful."

In the device status.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try to update driver for your network card. Your motherboard EVGA 11-CD-E630 is under H55 series.. But couldn't find Network driver for Windows 8.1.
http://www.evga.com/support/download/default.aspx

try get driver here:
Intel(R) 82577LC Gigabit Network
http://www.driverscape.com/download/intel(r)-82577lc-gigabit-network-connection
and this
http://www.marvell.com/support/downloads/search.do ---- search for part no. 88E8057 (Windows 8 installer):

Note: try get the drivers from above link first, uninstall the current installed driver then try these drivers.
