Network advice - Netgear modem/router to Linksys router with Tomato Firmware

Hi all,

I currently own this modem/router combo unit:

My question is, would it be alright to use this modem/router (dual band) along with another (single band) router, this one:

I plan to run this on a wired ethernet connection for my gaming PC connecting to the new router from Linksys (having both the modem and router next to each other on my desk where I game).

The reason I want to do this is because I have researched about the Tomato firmware working well on that router model. I plan to put Tomato firmware onto the new router as soon as I'd install it.

Everything else in the house would be on wi-fi including netflix streamers in my household (which use up a lot of the bandwidth because it's available). I would be using the Tomato firmware to give myself more bandwidth in the 30 / 5 mbps network that I currently have with TWC. I am trying to improve my latency. Bandwidth constantly says I get 37 mbps download, however in game I can immediately notice when everyone in my house gets on Netflix. This is the best solution I have come up with so please let me know if it is okay to go from a dual band modem/router to a single band router (since I'll be plugged in through the ethernet port on the Linksys router anyway, I would think it would only benefit my gaming). FYI, I was getting ping spikes with bad latency of about 800 ms when everyone is hogging the bandwidth in the hosue, when I typically get 49 ms (when no one is home, but myself).

That Linksys router is a G only. The Netgear is an N router. WIFI will work much better on the Netgear than the Linksys. I would not recommend using the Linksys.

Yes, agreed, but I'm going to be wired. And have the ability to make other devices wired as well. Wi-Fi on the 2.4 Ghz channel has a longer range than the 5 Ghz channel which is another reason that this could be just fine since the modem and router would be on my desk in the upstairs of the house next to my gaming computer.

I think everybody in the house is going to be unhappy with WIFI from the Linksys.... Your gaming might be great but everybody else is going to be unhappy.

I could use a powerline if their connection is not good enough, it's only 2 other people in the house, it would not be difficult to hardwire them as well. The QoS I would set up on Tomato would allocate enough bandwidth to each of them for Netflix streaming (6 mbps each, which is plenty enough to stream 1080p). I think this will improve everyone's experience, no?
