My family was planning on getting a Network Drive for backing up their files over the network automatically back up their whole computer once a week to once a month. I'm debating between a External Network Drive and a Internal Network Drive. Currently, a NAS or network-attached-storage is out of our budget at this moment...

I would also like to know what I can expect for back-up rates over the network and internally (if we determine we want to go that route)

I would also like to hear what ideas you may have for my predicament.

I made a list of the advantages and disadvantages of both drives. Here they are:

Both

  • ■ Everyone can access and manage their folder of items
    ■ I can manage the users and their viewing of the files (person one can't see/edit person two's files and vice versa)
    ■ I can automate backups
    ■ Plenty of storage (5TB)
    ■ same price ($140)

External Hard Drive

Shared by connecting to router or some other method

  • ■ Never moves or is jostled
    ■ Runs hot

Internal Hard Drive

Shared using windows file sharing

  • ■ Rarely moved/may be jostled
    ■ Would be cooled by ventilation

(not sure about these ones please verify)
    ■ I would get faster back up times
    ■ Bandwidth restricted when others are backing up

Also wondering if I could get your help choosing what drive to get

Internal Network Drive

Toshiba 5TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

External Network Drive

Seagate Backup Plus 5TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT5000100

Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV5000100

Seagate Backup Plus 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive with 200GB of Cloud Storage & Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 (STDT5000100)

Thanks in Advance!

Hi,
I am currently using a WD MyCloud storage system. It has most of the functions you are looking for:
1. Real time backup (or daily, weekly etc)
2. You can setup multiple profiles, and if you have the 'master' profile, you can control who sees what, who has access to what, and who has read/write permissions.
3.There is a time machine backup facility for Apple users.
4. You can download the WD MyCloud app for android devices.
5. You can sync with a dropbox account
6. You can customise what drives, files or folders to backup.
7. you can use it as a storage facility.
8. It has a USB 3.0 port to expand the capacity.
9. It comes in various sizes: 2, 3, 4 and 8TB

I have installed this device for many small businesses and they have all been very impressed with it, as I have.
It would depend on what broadband service you have to determine the speed from an external connection. If you have Superfast Fibre then your upload speed would be fine.
I have normal broadband and I am able to stream music and video from anywhere in the UK. (I have not tried abroad yet)

Whatever you decide to do, this device is definitely worth a look.
