Network causing PC shutdown

Hi all,

I have one here that doesnt seem to have come up anywhere I've looked. A couple of weeks ago my pc started to boot in to the win8 start screen then power off, no warning, no dump file either. Have now traced it to to something to do with the network as when i boot the Pc without the network cable in theres no no problem.
When i plug the network cable back in it takes under 5 seconds for everything to power off. I've reinstalled the motherboard drivers, the lan controller drivers, rebooted the broadband hub just in case it was that and nothing seems to have worked.

Anybody got any ideas/seen this before?

Mark,

One immediate question: have you tried another network cable - one that is known to be good?

Next question: are you using the ethernet port on the motherboard or are you using a usb ethernet adapter, a pci ethernet card or a USB ethernet adapter?

That all said I have encountered similiar problems via bad connections or physically failing ports. In general, plugging in a connection (e.g., USB, Ethernet, etc.) causes something to wiggle and then short out causing the PC to shutdown and (sometimes) restart. Tends to be intermittent at first and then get worse/more frequent as the physical connectivity deteriorates.

Open your case if you can while powered down and with the power cord disconnected . Then plug in the known good network ethernet cable while watching to see if the recipient Ethernet port moves or otherwise has an insecure/loose feel to it. May be obvious - may not be obvious.....

If not, you can install a separate ethernet card (again one that you know works) to be used in lieu of either the motherboard connection or an existing ethernet card.

The overall strategy being to identify some possible electrical short or eliminate that possibility.

Must add that if you are not comfortable swapping components in and out then get someone knowledgeable to help.

Thanks for the reply Ralston!

In the end as you suggested I tried the cable in a laptop which worked fine so after that I purchased a USB3 gigabit adaptor and now everything works as it should, looks like an issue with the onboard LAN which is now disabled.

Cheers :)
