On our domain, active directory users are mapped to a personal network drive through the home folder option.
When logged on to the domain, they will have a drive like u:\personal\username.

Occasionally users with Windows XP will have this drive drop their username, leaving only u:\personal
which they cannot access.

What could be the reason Windows decides to drop the username on the mapped drive? Our domain server is 2003.

Also, restarting the machine seems to fix most instances of this happening.

Hmm, sounds like a bug. And being Windows XP, I’m not sure MS is likely to fix it. In fact, they can use such bugs to force you to upgrade.

Anyway, I really have no idea. Did you query the MS knowledgebase to see if MS is aware of the problem?
