I've had some networking problems recently. (It's been 2 months now) . I have 8mbs downlaod and 0.6 upload. I live at my dad's house and my brother frequently watches HD videos or livestreams. So it uses quite some internet. At first, I thought that was the problem but I figured out it wasnt. because when he's watching videos. My ping sometimes goes up to 140ms. But when I'm getting the problems. I'm going alwasy over 1000 ping for a certain amount of time (atleast 1 min, to maybe 10min)

So I thought the problem was my router. The other one was like 7 years old and I got thought that we ahve to change it every 2 year or so. So I bought a Netgear WNR2000-100NAS Wireless Router N300 ( https://www.amazon.ca/gp/your-account/order-history/ref=oh_aui_menu_date?ie=UTF8&orderFilter=months-6 ) When I received it and I installed it. I realized that I had an extra kind of router or more internet port provider. It's easier to understand with that picture.

I can'T tell if my pc is connected from the yellow thing on the image or directly from the router. (because my dad put all the cables in the suspended ceiling and I can't find where it'S going because of the isolation.

As you can see, the modem is plugged from the wall, then 1 cable (internet cables that are actually blue and 1 yellow,) are going in the router. Then out of the 4 ports that can have ethernnet cables, 1 of them is plugged into that yellow thing. The brand name of that thing is DLink DGS-1005g. I guess it's called a desktop switch as I read. I have no clue since when I have that thing and I think our internet provider installed it because we needed more cables. But now that my brother is no more home,. I think we don'T need it anymore.

Here's my problem in brief,
I want to know. Is it the desktop switch(If that's how you call it) that is causing the problem or my internet provider is bad. Also I never got the opportunity to finish a pingtest when I was getting the 1800 ping problem because It was taking ages for the test to find the best server and because it was taking a long time my internet ahd time to come back to normal then I was not getting the wanted results of my hihg ping. :/

Hope you guys can help me, thanks :D

Yes, the yellow "thing" is a switch, and it will work in your situation if all cables are connected correctly.

In your situation, there might be two issues.

First and the foremost, you want to make sure you are using quality cables with good network connectors that have good and not rusty gold plated pins and also good "clips" that will hold it in place once it's plugged in to the switch.

Second, if your brother or anyone is downloading a lot of things or watching streaming videos from the Internet, your connection will indeed be affected with high latency and lowered bandwidth.

To test the cable and physical connection quality, there are usually features built in the network adapter's driver that you can try. Just go to the...

To test the cable and physical connection quality, there are usually features built in the network adapter's driver that you can try. Just go to the manufacturer's website and download the program if the feature was not installed.

To ease the bandwidth, the solution is simply to upgrade the bandwidth from the ISP to the higher level, and also choose a newer and more powerful router to replace the blue router to handle any heavy traffic or even to do flow control to set priority of different types of network traffic like video, internet browsing or gaming.

I just saw this last week with a Netgear WNR2020v2 (N300). It was causing exactly what you are describing. Random 1000ms+ latency. It was okay for most of his devices but especially the XBOX ONE reported huge latency.. I bought my buddy the $18 TP-Link router on Amazon, converted it to DDWRT for firmware, and and issue was effectively resolved. Consumer grade networking products are always a gamble.
