Network Server Installation

I'm learning Network Programming using Linux/Python. I want to stand up a server to test. I'm using VMware to host Linux. Should the Network server be Linux or WIN. Any articles would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think I could find an article based on this but based on my experience with VMware, Linux, and Networking, I think the Network server should be Linux since you're already using VMware to host it and that VMware provides a virtual network for you to use.
