Networking Utilization Drops

Now that the term is over, I decided to redownload world of warcraft, I noticed that sometimes the normal 1.4MB/s that I was getting would drop down to 300-400KB/s, I don't think its a ddos because they go away after a few seconds, however it does affect other computers running on the same network. I've never had this problem before, not sure if its the wow server or what.

I've looked around but can't seem to find a case exactly like this, where it only drops to 2-6%, and then jumps back up to 12%.
I'm using a wired connection into a Cisco E1200.

As far as the WoW download, try disabling peer-to-peer downloading, that can help. Those spikes appear to be something else though. It could be temporary in your area, but I would go directly to your modem, see if the issue still happens, if it does, then contact you service provider to see if there are any area issues. You could also try to run a ping command to a couple of different sites and WoW's server to see if maybe it's just the server.

First off it isn't B/s, because that would be BYTES per second, which is incorrect, speed over the Internet is normally b/s or BITS per second. A single bit is a single bit of information, a BYTE is 8 bits in one grouping, so if you were getting 1.4MB/s, that would be about 9.6Mb/s, and then your saying you drop down to 300-400KB, which mean you be dropping down to 2.4-3.4Mb/s. Possible but doubtful.

Addition to that, your saying 'affect other computer', well there is the main thing. Your trying to 'hog' the connection with a direct Wired connection, but the 'other computers' need thier turn, so you drop down when they want to watch the funny Xmas Kitty Videos on youtube, and so on.

If your going to download large (GigaBYTE size) files, it is best to do it overnight then to do it while 'other computers' are also trying to fight for use on the same network.
