Do these higher end games like black ops and what not - are they married to the machine like windows? Or is the disc itself the key?

What do you mean by married? The games are either downloaded to the computer hard drive or you can use the DVD disc and install with that medium.

With anything steam related the games follow the account. So if you can move the games from one PC though external HDD to the new one, you simply run steam and it registers the new pc and you are good to go. No re downloads, no hastle. Games like Starcraft which are a hard copy are also linked to the account, install from the disk and register the account and you are good to go.

it is tied to your account. you can play on different pc's, like if you have a laptop and a desktop, but of course not at the same time.

LOL. I have a lot to learn. I saw steam cards at best buy today and wondered what they were!
