New 1080p gaming monitor

So I currently have a ACER 22" 1680x1050 monitor which is pretty awesome.

But i'm looking for a full 1080p HD monitor. 22" seems to be the perfect size for me.

I've found some of the following,

I don't know much about the technical aspects of monitors but these seem to be the best i've found.


Also I have a 5970 so is it difficult to set up two monitors? Obviously the new monitor would be HDMI so is it literally just plug in and select which one is the primary monitor and away?

However, I notice all three of those are TN panels, and two of them are LED-backlit - are you aware of the blue tinge that LED backlights can cause? You haven't specified a budget yet, but you might consider the Dell U2211H, which is an e-IPS panel.

you might want to take a look at viewsonic. i've had excellent luck with them.

if you want the best visual quality go with a ccfl backlit IPS monitor instead of a TN monitor. TN's are known to have poor viewing angle but are much cheaper.

if you plan to be watching 1080p movies then go with the 1920x1080 monitor as it will stretch to the full width of your screen without distortion/black bars.

I don't think you can get a PVA or IPS monitor in that price range, so the LG Flatron W2261V-PF (the third of your links) is a good choice - it uses a CCFL backlight (which gives better appearance compared to a cheap LED backlight), and it has the resolution and inputs you need.

However, saying you'll use your old 1680x1050 monitor as secondary gets my attention. I haven't done multiple-monitor setups myself, but I've read in other threads that multiple monitors with different resolutions can be problematic.

MauveClound - how much extra would a PVA or IPS monitor cost? Would it be worth the investment from a gaming point of view?

ssddx - I couldn't really careless about the viewing angles as it's just going to be me in front of the computer. Not using it for a TV or anything like that.

I'm a little confused that your budget range is in euros, while the preferred website you list has prices in pounds, but the Dell U2211H is available at Overclockers UK for £229.99 (equivalent to €263.343 according to xe.com), and the HP ZR22w is available for £221.66 here:

Yeah sorry overclockers is a site I find to be good.

I'm actually in Ireland and i've checked out sites like Komplett.ie and pixmania.ie but found them to be a bit expensive for the spec.

Slightly expensive but it's got IPS.

Also i've noticed alot of IPS monitors have slower repsonse times to TN monitors.

Again I wouldn't be using photoshop or editing images/videos so would I even need an IPS monitor?

If the quoted response time is under 16ms, you're unlikely to notice the difference, and I agree that for you, it's probably not worth stretching your budget for an IPS monitor.

i've had the opportunity to use my 1600x1200 20.1" and my 1920x1080 40" as primary and secondary. you cannot stretch the taskbar across both but other than that there is no real issue.

OP,

if you want to save money go with the TN panel, just be aware that if you are not right in front of it you will get a greying of the image (think laptop screens) which is why I like the other types. if this doesnt bother you then a TN panel will be fine.
