pointless for gaming really.
1700-1800x is already 8/16 with the ability to OC to 3.9/4.0 easily enough.
Multiple GPU rigs for gaming are becoming more and more pointless as games aren't adding support for multiple GPUs, so unless you're doing some heavy GPU tasks that need multiple GPUs, you won't need that many PCIE lanes.

Do you think that for gaming/VR/4k movies---- the best specs you possibly need are like i-7 7700 or 1600x-1800x, a single 1080ti, 32gb RAM (maybe even 16), and a nice M2 SSD? Currently building my first high end PC for those purposes, don't want to waste money on ego purchase but want the aboslute max performance.

currently for high end gaming, the i7-7700k is "the best". But in the future, the 1600-1800xs may outpace it if games get more CPU heavy. (in maximum usage scenarions the 1600-1800xs crush the 7700k, but in single threaded tasks (many, but not all ,games) they're a bit behind) as video resolution increases, CPU usage drops because the GPU is what has to work harder. Decoding high resolution videos/movies, however is done on the CPU, but until you hit 8k, it's not really an issue.

32gbs of ram is pointless unless you're editing videos.
multiple GPUs are no-longer popular with gaming companies, so pointless, single strongest you can afford is best, and 1080tis are the single strongest, currently.
M.2 SSDs are pretty solid choice that arent' actually any more expensive than normal SSDs.

It will be interesting to see if a quad channel DDR4 8 core system offers anything gaming performance-wise over the economical 1700,1700X, 1800....; if not, most will probably frown on the what-will-undoubtedly- not-be-cheap' X399 boards, but, it will be nice to see what 'basic' X399 boards retail for (Asus has a Prime model)

So far I've seen $350 as the lowest price, and that didn't include an ethernet connection. Yea....even though I'm strongly considering ordering the TR, I gotta admit, it starts adding up. Once you commit to a CPU with so many cores and a monster mobo you really can't sell it short on other parts.

The great thing about the X399 8/16 core edition of threadripper is, it will come with a quad channel memory controller and 64 PCI-e lanes, im very interested, and at $549 for that, im more than interested, this explains why prices of the RyZen 7s have dropped.

Think what you can do with 64 PCI-e lanes, the MSI gaming pro carbon I looked at yesterday has 3 x M.2 slots all running at full speed from the CPU, so thats 4 PCI-e lanes per drive, thats only 12 of them gone, according to the specs, the rest are for 4 way SLi or Crossfire, id imagine, 2 or 3 of those graphics cards can run together at there full x16 speeds, which is by far a lot more than intel have to offer in their current line-up's.

I would have one over anything Intel have to offer, Intels x299 series is a rushed disaster, over heating chips and over heating mosfets, even the R5 1600 for half the price keeps up all day long with the 7800X, and the gaming performance with a simple check on youtube between Intel and AMD RyZen is that minimal now, its not even worth mentioning, AMD have come with updates in leaps and bounds since its release and the updates are not over yet.

Does 4 way SLI even really exist anymore at the 'supported in drivers' level?

I see a lot being made of the 64 PCI-e lanes; if 16x +16X SLI or Crossfire outperforms the 'paltry' 8x +8x of a Z270, we will soon know it... about 14 August , would be my guess.. ; can't wait for the reviews. Exciting times! :)

Should make for some interesting reading..

Here's some boards on pre-order to get you started, and have a look at, the price for boards is pretty much in-line with X299, the chips themselves are the cheaper parts:

I suppose 4 way is great if you're mining.

ASUS ROG Zenith EATX : https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-x399-rog-zenith-extreme-amd-x399-socket-tr4-e-atx-motherboard-mb-6a6-as.html

MSI Gaming Pro ATX https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-x399-gaming-pro-carbon-ac-amd-x399-socket-tr4-mb-329-ms.html

Gigabyte Gaming 7 ATX https://www.overclockers.co.uk/gigabyte-ga-x399-gaming-7-amd-x399-socket-tr4-atx-motherboard-mb-55s-gi.html

These boards look pretty much like the top tier boards for each company, im sure we will see some cheaper boards further down the line, These seem to all have all the bells and whistles, built in WiFi etc.

the CPU's: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/pc-components/processors/amd/amd-socket-tr4

I like the look of the Asrock boards, particularly the X399 Taichi. It's also the cheapest of all the boards I've seen priced.

The Asus Zenith is gorgeous, but I can't really see where the extra $200 went over the others.

I heard on a youtube channel it's basically cosmetic and a faster Ethernet port. idk that seems crazy.

10Gb yeah. The Asus products are the only ones I've seen with active VRM cooling too, but it looks like just a little 60mm fan. Hardly worth a couple Franklins.

My thoughts exactly. I also had my eye on the MSI card you mentioned. Good place to save a couple hundred when building an expensive machine.
