I think it is rather a thing within Apple right now. They are able to size the screen for the device rather than having to size the device for the screen as before.

The recent iPads have already got similarly unusual aspect ratios.

It would be hard to believe that a new screen aspect ratio could possibly be more annoying than the world's worst keyboard ever on my current 2019 MacBook Pro. Fortunately my MacBook Pro hasn't moved from it's current location for ~18 months now and I have an outstanding external keyboard attached to it.

Afraid the current line of 24" iMacs speaks for itself.

Combine that kind of mindset with essentially unlimited funds, and the capacity for some truly baffling products is very much there.
