I just updated my bios to version 1006, and now the max temp in Asus Probe is set to 86C! I tried lowering it back down to my old value of 60C, but it'll only go down to 64C. Any thoughts on why Asus has the temps so high?

Well, 80 deg C is the theoritical upper limit as published by AMD. Apparently the t-bird will melt down at 90 deg. Could be that Asus just decided to go with the "official" AMD limit. You're right though, anything over 60 should be considered excessive.

Asus had problems with the board misreporting temps. On later BIOS revisions they addd a 10C safety factor (they read 10C over the actual temp). People started complaining that their computers were shuuting down from heat protection. So instead of fixing the BIOS temp reading, Asus simply raised the shut off temp.

Thanks a lot! So if the sensor reports my cpu being @55C, it's really more like 45C? Hmm....so should I set the alarm/autosensor to 70C then, since in the unlikely even it even gets that high, it should still be safe? Thanks again for your help.

I kept hearing reports of high temps, I kept telling these guys to feel their heatsink and they all said it wasn't hot, just warm. So I looked into it and Asus said they added 10C to the temp readings in BIOS versions 1004 and later.
