Hello all!

I will soon be building a pretty decent PC for gaming and video editing.

Figured the only specs worth listing are:

ASUS Maximus VI Hero ATX MOBO

EVGA GTX 770 SC ACX Graphics Card

I'm still choosing between the i7 4770k and the newer i7 4771. With the 4770k, I'll be able to OC, however I'm very new at building PC's and am still really touchy around OCing. If I got the 4770k, I wouldn't be overclocking until farther down the road. The other option would be the i7 4771 which is clocked at a higher frequency but locked... Someone tell me what they think.

Also, I'm trying to decide between the stock Intel fan vs an aftermarket heatsink. For the 4771, the boost clock is quite high and a heatsink might be necessary. I know with the unlocked CPU I will definitely invest in a heatsink, but I don't know much in this area at all. What's a good CPU heatsink that is quiet, cheap, and capable of minor to average OCing.

If possible, I'd like to avoid water cooling.

Thanks for the quick response!

The 4771 has a higher boost clock frequency (3.9 Ghz). I'm pretty sure that means under loads it can push up to that, but then the 4770k I guess could be overclocked past that... Boost clock means what I think it means, correct?

And can you recommend any heatsinks that are quiet, cheap, and good for minor-average OC?

I don't know much about overclocking either but i can say that the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler is highly regarded as a cheap and efficient CPU cooler. Retails for about $45 and should suffice for your minor to average overclock just fine.

Oh, I haven't checked Intel's site... All my research has been from the specs on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007671%2050001157%20600005573%20600436886&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&CompareItemList=343%7C19-116-941%5E19-116-941-TS%2C19-116-901%5E19-116-901-TS&percm=19-116-941%3A%24%24%24%24%24%24%24%3B19-116-901%3A%24%24%24%24%24%24%24

Lol huge link...

It sounds like that cooler is popular around this forum. I think that is what I'll be going with.

maybe you should, it a retailer site, sometime they do have incomplete information.

That's true, I will... I think Newegg didn't mention the 4770k boost clock frequency... Anyways I've decided to have the option to overclock in case I want to would be good, so I'm going with the k. Thanks for the advice!
