arrrrghhh.

did some testing @ lunch.
disregard my last post please.
the software mode in max sux with geometry1 and 2 scenes.
run in open gl instead.

appereantly software mode is faster in but few specific areas, and not that much u need to worry bout ever considering anything else then open gl.

this is how it is with limited time and real world testing i suppose. that´s why i would love some pro tester like tom get into some real world hard-core testing and tweaking in a pro 3d app like 3ds max. but i suppose the 3d graphic art community isn´t big enough to take into consideration for specialised time consuming tests. it´s all games games games quake this quake that.

could probably spend a week or so boosting performance through bios settings in all 17 pc´s here @ work - but no time for that.

anyway. just wanna share my experience again. run 3ds max in open gl always. stay away from software mode.

Yeah, I tested the heidi driver too, it does really suck, even the P3 optomized one really sucked too. Looks like when the geforce 3 comes mainstream I will buy a geforce 2 MX.

It would be nice to see how the radeon turns out, and I'd love to see a geforce 3 handle the wireframe.

I believe the GF2 would beat the Radeon in polygon rendering. Except if you are texturing the polygons and have alot of overdraw, then the radeon would pick up some ground and maybe even surpase the GF2 due to hyperZ. Anything in wireframe mode I believe the GF2 would be better, but it appears for commercial cards in 3dsmax that the CPU is the overriding factor to consider. So based on W2k, drivers, and game play I recommend the GF2 over the Radeon. Don't really know about GF3 drivers or 2d quality. My only concern for GF2s would be high resolution 2d quality which would carry over into your modelling in 3dsmax. My recommendation would be either a
ELSA GLADIAC MX or ELSA GLADIAC GeForce2 GTS due to there very good ruputation in 2d quality with nVidia chipsets. Oh I almost forgot, with the GF2 mx you can use two monitors!!!! very c   l, which could be very very useful in 3dsmax.

Got a reply at rage3d. Unfortunately the guy uses max 2.5 so the numbers aren't completely conflusive. They seem a bit higher than they should but maybe the opengl drivers are good for ati but most likely max 2.5 won't load the file entirely and not display everything in the viewport. Everyday something changes what I think the best card would be for me to buy. I guess I can't make that dision until I see max4 benchmarks with the radeon.
