New BFG 6800OC not a big improvement from FX5600??

ok, So I've been contemplating upgrading my GPU and maybe CPU as well...

My existing setup is the following:
ASUS SK8V socket 940 Mobo
AMD Opteron 140 CPU
1GIG Corsair XMS registered
Geforce FX5600 256

SO, I primarily play Star Wars Galaxies, which tends to be equally dependant on CPU, RAM, AND GPU. But I just got Star Wars Battlefront too.

I brought home a BFG 6800 OC card and plorrped it in, thinking i'd see a huge improvemtn in my frame rate...well, i don't.

So I'm ordering an Opteron 148 from Newegg, gonna plop that in and see if there's any big improvement. I'm just SHOCKED that upgrading from FX5600 to the 6800OC didnt yield any noticable improvement!

Just to make sure it's working right...can you run some standard benchmark (like 3DMark or AM3) and report back. Also, what driver are you using?

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.

even the Folding@home work as good benchmarks. they are like prime95 during serious stuff.

hmm. I must admit i did not benchmark my old card. nroe did i use a driver scrubber. I just uninstalled the old NV drivers via the add/remove software control panel.

I will try again and will download a benchmarking utility to test it out...

I bought star wars battlefront and expected to see some crazy grahpics and bring my system to its knees. Unfortunetly its rather commonplace and the graphics dont really stress anything. Not to mention online play is either capped at 15 fps or 30 fps. I love how george lucas thanks people whove put thousands of dollars into their pc by giving them the lovley ability to run either 15 or 30 fps in a new generation game.

If you wanna see noticleable improvment try playing a game thats actually gonna stress your graphics card. Id recommend farcry at high resolutions, id expect your old card wont keep up like it can on battlefront. Or id recommend trying doom 3.

You can take a stock mustang, and a 500 hp gto around a sharp curve and there both gonna be stuck pretty much at the same speed, but once you hit the apex and start going straight, the gto is gonna pull away. Consider battlefronts a sharp curve that pretty much any semi new videocard can take just as fast as the new ones. For example, my geforce2 mx 440 pci in cs got 99 fps, and my 6800 gt gets 99 fps, no improvment, did i sell my card and get mad and buy something new, no, I started buying games that used what the new card had.

heya pdxgamer;

You should see literally a 50FPS difference between those cards in high end games like doom3 and farcry, if not then something is definately wrong somewhere. use a driver cleaner tool from Nvidia or ATI to clean it up.

well, I ran 3dMark last night with the new card and got a score of 7261. Is that bad or good? And what other info would you need to determine if it is a good score for my setup? I'll run it again tonight along with Aquamark.

thats bad not good you should be hitting 8500min in 3dmark03 i got 10300 with a 128mb 6800. my system spec below to compare urs with mine.

galaxy 6800 128 all pipline on 16 from 12

check ur drivers mate and double check everyhing else 7000 is a bit low for ur calibere card i see XP1900 score higher at about 8500.

You're getting low FPS because you plorrped your card. Uninstall the nVidia drivers, run Driver Cleaner, remove the card, reinstall it <b>without</b> plorrping it, reinstall the drivers and that should fix the problem.

ok, did it two days ago, and 3D mark gave me a 7500.
Then last night i did the driver cleaner, reinstalled new drivers downloaded fromNvidia, and got an 8500

Im not sure how Registered ram affects gaming performance but im willing to guess you might be able to score alittle higher.

ok, so I plopped in the Opteron 148 I got last night, and got a 3D Mark score of 9400 now, with the BFG 6800 OC, and the Opteron 148. Does that sound reasonable? What should i do other than a clean install of the OS to maximize my score?

If you're referring to 3DMark03 then that's an excellent score, sounds about right for a 6800NU.

You don't <i>need</i> to reinstall Windows when you switch cards. Driver Cleaner does the job, but if there are major performance issues that you cannot resolve with those utilities, the simplest and most fail-safe method is to just reinstall the OS. A lot of veteran Windows users have learned over the years that it's the best thing to do whenever there is a major hardware change, i.e., a video card. If there are no artifacts, distortion, no instability, and the games are running fast then you're good to go. Personally, I prefer to reinstall when I switch cards.

As far as tweaking your computer, read "Enhancing System Performance". I think Slava went a bit too far with the suggestions, but if you sift through it there are a lot of basic things that are important to double-check. There are too many issues for us to sit here and reinvent the wheel, so make sure you read it.
