In light of the fact that ConsimWorld is about to begin charging for
access to its forums, I've started a new Yahoo mailing list for
discussions about playing board wargames. More details about the list
are at

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/boardwargaming

If you'd like to join, please sign up using the Web interface at that URL,
or by sending email to boardwargaming-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Happy gaming,

Dave

That's nuts. Bet you they change it back or go under inside 12 months.

Seeing how "they" is one guy who has been supporting the wargame hobby's
best online resource on his own for the past many years with precious little
assistance from most of the thousands that use the site, it would be nuts
for him to keep on going without finding a source of funding. Fifteen bucks
for year's subscription is a pttance for what is offered in return.

For a message board? I think not. For original content, sure. But not a
message board that is built by the people who use it. How would it be if
someone was able to charge for r.g.b? Sorry, I'm not buying it.

He's welcome to try this business model, but I won't be participating and
I'll bet others won't either.

What's wrong with alt.games.wargames?

If you *must* dilute wargames discussion with a Yahoo Group, I suggest you
sign it up at Gmane.org, which makes Yahoo Groups usable.

True for the most part. However, Gmane does filter out posts where the sender
has turned off archiving (X-Archive: no). Since some people do this
automatically with their E-mail, you can expect gaps in the Gmane database
when compared with the corresponding Yahoo group.

Move the discussions to rec.games.board instead!

Sounds interesting - but would this only work with a group that has open
settings, letting in all the spambots?

I'm not sure, but Gmane does archive the Spielfieks Yahoo Group and
there has not been any problem with spam on that group.

I'm not sure either, but you can't post through Gmane without having a
verified responsive email address in the email and reply-to fields of your
NNTP headers, so who really cares if the spambots read the groups, as long
as they don't post to them?
