Approximate Purchase Date: Sooner the better, but if a major technology/price change is imminent I could wait

Budget Range: $1500 - $2000

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Multitasking, Data transfers, Database development, and queries (though much of the crunching is offloaded to cloud these days), some video and audio editing and transcoding

Are you buying a monitor: Yes. Dell SP 2208WFP is the main in my current 3-monitor setup. Other 2 are lower end and smaller. So, I could get a nice one running off of my spiffy new GPU, with the Dell relegated to secondary items while a nice large one takes over the main windows and eliminates one of the crappy monitors

Parts to Upgrade: Complete build

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Usual, not particular to any one of Newegg, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, or other legitimates

Location: Sacramento, CA, USA

Parts Preferences: Lean towards AMD, rare gaming (do not need to chase gaming graphics speed, just processing for video, file transfers, database crunching and memory/storage for multitasking)

Overclocking: Maybe

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe

Your Monitor Resolution: Open-minded, but want very good quality as viewed 12 hours per day. No professional editing being done.

Additional Comments: Full ATX, Full modular PSU, somewhat upgradeable in future

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading:
Long overdue, have the cash

======================================================================================================

From PC Part Picker, this is what I came up with as a rough start:

Price Summary:

$289.99 (CPU) + $57.97 (cooler) + MoBo ($195.99) + Memory ($239.98) + Storage ($299.94) + Video Card ($349.96) + Case ($116.98) + PSU ($124.99) + Misc. ($125) = $1,800.80

Remaining needs: Monitor, Sound (card and speakers).

Was shooting for $2000 max, so if there is overkill on other items to allow for sound and monitor, that would help significantly.

Appreciate all of your assistance -- Tom's has helped me build my last two builds.

You have a Micro Center a little over an hour away in Tustin.

For your usage I would highly recommend getting the 3900x for $390 plus your time. That's an amazing price for the performance.
https://www.microcenter.com/product...-am4-boxed-processor-with-wraith-prism-cooler

Micro Center also discounts a cpu and compatible mobo purchase another $20, unfortunately they are out of stock on almost every mobo.

Unfortunately with Covid, most AMD boards are in very short supply so it's a tough time to put a pc together. I would not recommend anything less than a B550 or x570 motherboard for the 4000 series cpu's and PCIe 4.0 allows far more flexible storage options.

You have to be careful with B450 and x470 boards as they may not have a compatible BIOS installed for the 3000 series cpu's.

Now the 3900x is a beast and you'll want to get a good cooloer for it. Not my area so hopefully someone else can chime in.

^That's a great build.

If you need reassurance NorCalJon, I'm running a 3800x, x570 mobo and 2070S, it's a great pc!

First, thank you all for all your help. You all provide an invaluable service.

@GarrettL , I am appreciative of your reassurance -- I'll probably be pulling the plug on exactly this build. But I did want to acknowledge your driving as Google Maps suggests about 418 miles between Tustin and Sacramento, CA . More power to you if that is an hour (I tease, of course).

If I am to be hesitant in any direction, it would be a mid-size case? Great savings, great reviews on the NZXT, and this case specifically. Is there an equivalent quality but in a full tower (even if a few $ more)? Or will I truly not miss it, and appreciate your recommendation's front bridge? Secondly, are the case fans that come with it (in the mid-tower or other suggestions) sufficient? (I'm not a gamer as I'm sure you saw.) The CPU cooler recommended I'm sure will take a lot of the burden off.

Thanks again!

Well @logainofhades et al, ya'll are SO good that that board is sold out at most retailers, or available with a $100 premium now at those places that have it. Amazon can get the Pro (vs. Elite) version, but with WiFi on June 15th for $270. Not sure how the differences would apply to this rig. Or lemme ask it another way, is there a better option if I am prepared to spend $100 more for the recommended MoBo?
