Hi,

So I recently finished a build with these parts:

MSI x99s SLI PLUS
i7 5280K
H110 CPU Cooler
MSI GTX 970 4G
G.Skill Ripjaws Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4-2666 Memory
EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Windows 8.1
HDMI connection to samsung s22c300h monitor

I'm getting issues with flickering column lines, as shown below.

I have installed the latest nvidia drivers.

I have not been able to test a different cable/graphics card yet, but will hopefully today.

I'm wondering if this is a RAM issue, as when I was seating one of the sticks, I foolishly tried to insert it incorrectly, and applied a mild amount of pressure. Though reading online, it sounds like most people think these lines are an issue with the graphics card.

During the installation of Windows 8.1 from an optical drive, there were no lines present. However, after restarting after the installation was complete, I saw the lines.

Does anyone have any intuitions of what might be wrong?

Thanks!

Solution
its ether a bad GPU or cable. Try and giggle the cable a little to see if the lines will go away, if not try a different cable or port on the gpu. if that doesn't fix it then rma the card for a new one. Ram and cpu will not cause that issue with a dedicated graphics card.

The lines do occur during boot/BIOS. The monitor/cable works fine (no lines or anything) when connected to my Macbook Pro, but the cable is fragile and will lose connection with the monitor if it is ever-so slightly pulled out.

Oh no, so you think there is a possibility of the CPU being bad too? 🙁

Ah thank you; that is a relief! I will try and get a spare GPU / new hdmi cable today and see what happens. Will post the results!

So I tried a new HDMI cable and DVI cable, no luck. I swapped out the card for my old GTX 9800 and everything works. Looks like I have to RMA my GTX 970. Thanks for the help everyone!
