Hi, i want to build a computer for a family member where they plan to use it for office based things and some lite video editing.

They told me they want it to have lots of RAM (not sure what that means other than they want it to be fast). But really anything compared to what they have now will be fast. I was thinking of at least 8 to 16GB of ram.

A friend also mentioned that EEPROM hard drives are good and something about an EEPROM board that goes on the MOB should be good.

Any thoughts? I have no idea on Intel vs AMD

my budget is now $800 to $900 i dont need a monitor....i dont need software or OS. i do need a wireless capability to connect to internet

I think many of the builds that you’re considering are much more expensive than you need to spend for what you want to do with the PC.

For the wireless networking, you don’t need to buy an expensive motherboard with built-in WiFi. You can get a very decent USB network adapter for $10 or a PCIe WiFi card for $15 or so.

The PC I’m writing this on has a Ryzen 3400g and it’s quite fast. I’ve also built PCs for a number of friends using the Ryzen 3200g and everybody has been quite happy with them too. The Radeon graphics built into the 3200g and 3400g are more than enough for light gaming and...

The i3-10100 has 4 cores / 8 threads and the Ryzen 3600 has 6 cores / 12 threads. The i3 has slightly better single core performance. The 3600 would be better overall, but your budget has to support it. The i3 is normally a little more than half the cost of the 3600 but low stock on the 3600 has pushed its price up.

The 10100 is a 4 core, 8 thread cpu, so 2/3rds the 3600 (which is 6 cores, 12 threads). You would want a Core i5 to match up to the Ryzen 5, the Ryzen 3 cpus are equivalent to the Core i3

in reviewing the latest cpu you recommended and comparing it to the amd ryzen 5 3600 .....and again it may be that i did something wrong.......the i3-10100 is not as good as the amd ryzen 5 3600......not even close.......and i looking at this correctly?

originally i was willing to spend about $200 to $250 on the cpu..........but i guess i can go more if there is a good deal. thoughts?

this tends to happen with me.....i am kinda frustrated........so i am willing to up my budget for the cpu.......

how are these cpus: i5-10600k, i7-10700k, i9-9900k......now these are on the high end of the budget for me........originally i was hoping to spend around $250 but given the things being out of stock i should probably up my budget........kinda frustrated........

this build has a very powerful processor (more than most office PCs need) in a very small mini-itx form factor case(you could probably get better value with a slightly larger micro-atx format, but you stated you wanted a small build) As for the i7-9700k on sale that is a great value but you would need a very expensive Z390 motherboard to utilize the overclocking abilities of this processor, plus the proccesor is way to powerful for an office user to even utilize you are better off going with a more sensible i3 or i5. I chose an intel platform just because right now prices on AMD cpus are crazy high because the 7nm wafer supply is drying up between all the things that use 7nm wafers (6000 series GPUs, PS5, Xbox series X and S, and ryzen 5000 series processors so for a build right now intel is your best CPU option since they are actually in stock for MSRP.

thanks for the build.....i will definitely take a look

one question: i found this i7-10700kf for ~ $289 but this has integrated graphics so does this mean one can not have an external GPU......this is much cheaper than the i7-10700k...is this good

I do appreciate both of your builds....i do. And i am sorry i did not jump on it right away while the builds were still relevant been kinda busy with "stuff" but i do appreciate your build info. If anyone has current build info i would also appreciate that as well.

the AMD 5000 series and INTEL 10th gen stuff what are these cpus?

You can currently buy the AMD Ryzen 3200g for $139 (4 cores/4 threads) or the Ryzen 3400g (4 cores/8 threads) for $171 from Amazon (this is only $21 over the retail price) -- both are in stock. Either of them should be fine for your PC. Both come with good cpu coolers and the Radeon video built into both chips should be fine for your needs and save you the cost of a video card. One of the big advantages of the AMD cpus is that you can easily upgrade them in the future, if you want.

thanks for the cpu suggestions. the built in graphics is very nice indeed and to be honest i haveonly dont one other build that used a gpu and that was a build i did for myself, but i thought i might need to move away from this in this build because for these reasons: build would have some light gaming, some video editing and want multiple monitors to be used for work as well

i am kinda leaning towards the i7-10700kf (priced at $289 at amazon) .......but getting an external GPU...thoughts?

FYI i am not a pro builder or anything i just build every once and a while for a family member. i try to keep costs down where i can and it takes me A LONG TIME to decide on anything because i take the build suggestions here and research them a bit.......tweeking them sometimes.....but usually not much. Anway, i had finally decided on "ok i am going with the AMD RYZEN 5 3600" only to find out its out of stock.............boy the wind has blown out of my sails for sure.......so i am kinda leaning towards spending more than i thought....dont know why just am.................anyway, does anyone know if the amd ryzen 5 3600 will come back down to its ~ $200 price tag?

It may come down when the 5600x stock stabilizes but the 3600 will still be a better value due to the cost of the 5600x. If you only need integrated graphics, a Ryzen 3400G can do the job and the cost is normally low for this CPU. The Ryzen 3400G vega 11 graphics is superior to any Intel iGPU that I know of.

Unfortunately, poor stock for some GPU's and new CPU's is making parts list development somewhat difficult right now. I'm trying to put together a budget build for myself and have put it aside because I can't find the parts I want.

You mentioned expanding your budget. It would be easier to suggest a build if you could provide a hard budget target. Anyone here trying to help will exploit the budget to offer the best performance to budget that they can. That's not to say you'd end up with the best option for your money. It will likely end up being a compromise that's made because parts availabilty is currently limited in some areas, having the effect of increasing prices on other parts that are actually available. Fleabay scalpers are making things even worse.

In a perfect world, everything would be in-stock with stable prices making it an easy task to meet your goals, but alas, this is not the case.

Nice build. Too bad you can't get a GTX 1650 anywhere right now unless you want to buy from scalpers. Please, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm looking for one too for myself. Actually, a GTX 1650 Super.

Looks like a 9700k may be your best option, use the IGP for now and pick up a graphics card when prices and stock stabilize:

I think many of the builds that you’re considering are much more expensive than you need to spend for what you want to do with the PC.

For the wireless networking, you don’t need to buy an expensive motherboard with built-in WiFi. You can get a very decent USB network adapter for $10 or a PCIe WiFi card for $15 or so.

The PC I’m writing this on has a Ryzen 3400g and it’s quite fast. I’ve also built PCs for a number of friends using the Ryzen 3200g and everybody has been quite happy with them too. The Radeon graphics built into the 3200g and 3400g are more than enough for light gaming and can even play many AA games if you turn down the resolution and detail. You don’t need to spend money on a graphics card for what you want to do.

Unfortunately, the chances of getting a good price on a Ryzen cpu before Christmas are slim. The decent prices that Amazon had this morning on the 3200g and 3400g are gone and the prices tonight are higher.

One thing you could do would be to order an AMD Athlon 3000g for $49 from Amazon. You won’t be able to receive it until just before Christmas, but you can order it now to be sure that you get one and it’s a very capable little cpu. Even though it’s called an Athlon, it actually has 2 Ryzen cpu cores and 4 threads, fast Radeon graphics, is quite capable of light gaming and video and might well be all you need for your PC. At any rate, at $49 it would get you a working PC and you could always replace it with a faster Ryzen cpu at a later date, if you need to. I’ve built a PC with the Athlon 3000g and it’s amazingly fast for $49. It’s unlocked and you can overclock it if you want.

I think that you’ll be much better off with an AMD Ryzen cpu than an Intel cpu. AMD offers you a better upgrade path, much faster graphics if you’re using a cpu with integrated graphics, and generally much better performance per dollar when prices aren’t inflated. Intel has had to drop their prices because very few people are buying them these days. In several markets in build-it-yourself PCs during the past year, AMD has been outselling Intel 9 to 1 and there are good reasons why 6 out of the top 10 best selling cpus at Amazon currently are Ryzens. A week or two ago, 9 out of the top 10 selling cpus at Amazon were all AMD Ryzens. The reason there are more Intel cpus in the current listing is because it’s getting harder to get a Ryzen cpu before Christmas because everybody wants to buy them and Intel has had to drop their prices to get people to buy their cpus.

Prices will come back to normal after Christmas, so if you can wait a little more than a month, you’ll have lower prices and a wider choice of components. I would wait for a month or so, so you can get an AMD Ryzen.

I probably shouldn’t tempt you, but there are rumors that AMD will announce a new generation of even faster Ryzen 5000 series cpus with integrated graphics with 6 cores/12 threads and 8 cores/16 threads at the CES show in January. I’m personally planning to buy one of those cpus, but they may not be available until March or April of 2021 or even later, and you may not be able to wait until then.

Here's a build for $340 that should work fine for what you want to do. The $340 price assumes that you buy the AMD Athlon 3000g cpu from Amazon for $49. This includes a 1 Terrabyte NVMe SSD which will make it quite fast. You can cut the price by $40 if you want to go with a 500 Gigabyte NVMe SSD instead of the 1 Terrabyte drive, but I would go with the Terrabyte SSD. I forgot to add the WiFi capability, but as I said above, you can get that for $10 to $15 more.

I want to thank everyone for responding and spending ALOT of time helping me out on this. As i finalized the build (ie...finally reviewed everyone's comments and picked parts) the build requirements changed. The boss (my wife) came to me and changed things on me. I was still able to use the suggestions here but i had a few questions and since the "build" requirements have changed ie...more like gaming computer i wasnt sure if i should create a new thread........so i will post requirements on a new thread....hope this is the right thing if not just let me know.
