I'm looking for advice/suggestions on my current build I've pieced together. I've been doing research, but I'm still unsure as to whether this would be good for my needs or not.
This will be my first ever build, so any helpful advice is appreciated. I also apologize if this is a bit long.

Approximate Purchase Date: Probably somewhere around February-March

Budget Range: $600-650

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, web surfing, college papers/research.

Are you buying a monitor: Yes; but this is not part of the 600-650 budget

Do you need to buy OS:
Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Preferably Amazon, but I will use Newegg too.

Location: City, State/Region, Country - we need to know where these parts are being assembled and whether there are good store-only deals available

Parts Preferences:
I'm thinking Intel, since many say it's better for gaming nowadays.

Overclocking: Highly doubt it

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: I have no monitor, but most I see for the my screen size I want is around these resolutions: (1600x1200, 1680x1050, 1920x1080, 1920x1200 )

Additional Comments: I don't play much of the "latest and greatest" games currently. My most commonly played games are(No order of importance): Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Orcs Must Die series, Minecraft, Dungeon Defenders, and occasionally some World of Warcraft. I would like, if it's possible, to max out these games with smooth and consistent fps.
Another note, when I do build this computer, I will begin to play some newer/ more graphically intense games: GTA IV(and V if it will run), The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2, Dirt series & other similar racing games, and possibly Far Cry 3. I will be pleased to run these games(smoothly) at low-medium settings depending on how graphically intense the game is.

As I mentioned, $600-650 is for the tower and OS, and I have a $200 max budget for all peripherals. I will need a keyboard, mouse, monitor, and possibly speakers and headset (The latter probably coming later). I have a preferred monitor size of 20-21" as it seems to be a decent balance between price/size and I also dislike big screens for computers. At Best Buy online I have seen monitors in that area for around $100-130 which seems good for me. As far as keyboard and mouse, the keyboard will probably be a cheap $10-15 one and the mouse I am looking at is a Razer Abyssus for around $30.
This computer will also need to last for atleast 2-3 years, and I plan on reusing the case and anything else I can.

I would like to know if the parts I picked are compatible and worth getting. If you find anywhere I can squeeze out more from this rig, please let me know. I would also like to know if I'm being realistic in expecting high settings for the older games I have listed.

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($89.99 @ Amazon)

Total: $642.90

Solid Dual Core CPU with Hyper Threading, 8gb DDR3 is the sweet spot, HDD is 7200rpm SATA 6gb/s, USB 3.0 (Mobo & Case), MSI's Twin Frozr is one of the best coolers allowing for higher overclocks (if you so choose to).

Just my .02, your build was pretty dead on, just moved things around for more performance

Thanks for the suggestions, that's a good looking build; I also really like the changes. I think I'll be using this as my build for now and see how things go till I am ready to purchase all the parts. Once again, thanks for the help.
