So im not a complete beginner, built a PC 4ish years ago, maybe...

It's about time I upgraded it, which most likely means scavenging anything that can be scavenged and building a new pc.

I play a fair few games so thats really the aim here.

Parts that I think can be carried over.

Corsair 850AX PSU - http://www.corsair.com/en-us/professional-series-gold-ax850-80-plus-gold-certified-fully-modular-power-supply
CM HAF-X Case - http://www.coolermaster.com/case/full-tower/haf-x/
Cheap optical drive/network card I picked up somewhere.

Parts that really need replacing
Intel i7-2600k CPU
AMD 6970 GPU
8GB 1333 DDR3 RAM
hard drives/motherboard

I'm looking at the skylake chipset, either i5-6600k or i7-6700k. A note on CPU is im not really looking to overclock i'm not sure on performance vs cost for the chips.
Then pick up a gtx 970/980.
Additionally looking towards getting a ssd (most likely 256GB) and a 1TB HDD.
Maybe 16GB of RAM, maybe 8GB not really sure. I like the idea of 16GB :)
Motherboards i'm pretty much clueless about.

I guess my lack of knowledge and limited experience comes in when comparing components though, I dont really know what i'm looking for. But thats why forums exist right?

The 2600k is still a good cpu, the cost of upgrading to a skylake imho isn't worth the cost. Instead of a new cpu/motherboard add that to the gpu budget and get a 980ti, adding an SSD is a good choice as it will make the system feel faster with its shorter boot and load times.

Interesting, that makes things a hell of a lot easier :)
honestly then, if i look at 980ti's there is approx £150 difference between the cheapest and most expensive and im struggling to see much of a difference.

Thanks for the advice. So I just chose 3 different cards at random here, if you were in my position whhich would you pick or is there another card that is in particularly good value? https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/parts/compare/evga-video-card-06gp44995kr%2Cmsi-video-card-gtx980tigaming6g%2Czotac-video-card-zt9050510p/

Once again thanks for the advice.
