Hello,

My current computer is over 10 years old and I have not done any work to it in over 5. I'd appreciate if someone can double check my work for compatibility and make any recommendations if any are applicable.

My main purpose is internet, school and photo editing (Canon 5Dmiii). I don't have time and therefore don't do much gaming with the exception of the occasional old school C&C RA2. I might try out Halo Wars if I have time. I hoping this build will last another 10 years.

I intend to reuse my Antec 900 case and Corsair 650 watt power supply. Everything else is being upgraded including to Win 10. I've been looking at B&H Photo because of free shipping and no sales tax to CA. Here's what I've come up with:

Intel Core i7-8700

Samsung 500GB 970 EVO NVMe m.2 (main drive)

XFX Force Radeo RX 580GTS
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1339792-REG/xfx_force_rx_580p8dfd6_radeon_rx_580_graphic.html

I added a 3.5" to 2.5" HDD bay converter, SATA cable for the 1TB drive and Windows 10.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend using a 10 year old PSU even if it was a higher quality unit as it's probably close to it's end of life and you don't want to damage your new parts. Also if your getting the 8700 then I would swap the motherboard to a B360 or H370 and save some money. The memory, SSD's & GPU are fine although you could save a bit more money if you swapped the memory to 2666mhz and with Intel the speed differences don't make a big difference in performance.
