New build, boot problem. Blank monitor. no beep. Bad CPU?

Hi, Can someone please help me figure out why this new build won't boot properly? It appears to boot, but the monitor does not display anything, then switches to power-saving mode.

BACKGROUND:

The computer is a new build for my parents. I built one a few years ago with no problems, so this is only my second build.

System appears to boot OK (fans whirr, LEDs come on) but MONITOR does not display anything. No BIOS, no cursor. Blank screen. Its my old monitor which I know is in working order.

I have tested to see if all components are securely in their sockets. I have tried re-setting the CMOS plug. Tried both digital HDMI and analogue VGA monitor cables. Using old but working PS2 mouse/keyboard with it.

Monitor is plugged in via a graphics card, and am wondering if that is the problem, or somethnig else? The Motherboard has onboard Graphics, but I needed a way to connect the monitor as there;s no ports for it otherwise.

I tried cannibalising my old graphics card out of another PC, but unfortunately its a different size format, so can't use it to test.

SEQUENCE OF EVENTS:

1) When plugged in - GREEN Motherboard Power light comes on.
2) Power button on front switched to ON.
3) Front GREEN LED comes on, but SOLID (On other PC, it flickers)
4) NO BEEP. Unsure if this Mobo has a speaker on it though.
5) ALL fans whirring, LEDs on. CPU Fan ON.
6) HDD makes "activity" noises.
7) MONITOR fails to show anything. Goes to Power Saving Mode after 5 seconds, blank screen.

NO additional drivers have been installed yet. I have disks, but no screen to navigate menus with.

The DVD drive behaves oddly - pressing the "eject" button ejects the drawer, which then IMMEDIATELY closes again. No idea if thats significant.

I have been through the checklist, everything obvious seems to be OK. I have read other threads, but not found exact duplicate of problem.

NO power problems. system stays on, whirring away until I switch it off.

My thoughts are maybe the CPU/Processor is dodgy (as no beep?), or the graphics card is not working. Any (better) ideas?

hey do me a favor, go look in the box for the computer case until you find a motherboard speaker. Motherboard speakers come with the computer case everytime but some motherboards have the speaker integrated.

My tidyfreak Mum helpfully binned the box already

Did check all packaging, if there was anything, don't I'd have missed it. My Thermaltake Soprano case bought previously never came with a speaker.

I *think* the ASUS M5A78L has an onboard one. But unsure without more Googling.

Can someone with more experience than me verify it, or that "no beep" means a defective processor than needs to be replaced?

Is your CPU power connector plugged in (top Left four pin), speak is a four pin bottom right where the power, HD LED, reset connectors are. You should have a user manual with that board.

Yes, CPU power connector is in. I have a user manual for the motherboard, which I followed by steps as indicated.

All internal cables/power etc checked and been removed/replaced in case not plugged in properly..

Am I right in thinking the bottom right pins are the case speakers though?? They are plugged in OK.

1) The mobo req 2 pwr connectors, the 24 (or 20) pin and that 6 pin (or 4 I don't remember). So did you plug them both in. If you did, follow next step.
2) Check monitor cable, it may be bad
3) Check video card, it may be bad. Put the card onto another computer to see if it boots up. My first video card died and I had no boot up screen at all, the monitor went to sleep mode just like you said.
4) Get a known working video card and put it in this build to see if you get any screen.
5) Check your monitor
6) Last resort is a bad mobo, more specifically bad pci-e slot. Or bad PSU.

This mobo does not have an integrated graphic card.
Disconnect your dvd writer because you said it's acting funny.
Only plug in the monitor+kb+mouse+1 HDD. Don't plug in anything else until you get some visual.

Thanks.. I'll experiment with some of these tomorrow.

Both mobo power connectors are in OK. the smaller one is a 4 pin.

The HDMI cable definitely works, both it and the monitor are from my older PC.

Video card is brand new, tried a different one taken from old (working) PC, but it was incompatible size..also vice versa, new one can't fit in my old PC slots.
Short of buying another, can't see how else I can test it really.

Have also read the "breadboarding" thread, and will also try that if still no joy. Arrrghh.

Also try just 1 stick of RAM in the 0 slot just to see if that will help.

Thanks.. I have an 8GB matched pair of Corsair Vengeance modules in the slots nearest the CPU. Somewhere else mentioned that switching them over to the other 2 slots might make a difference. Will try that first. Then your suggestion of just the one.
